Octavia tapping sound from engine

Featured Replies

Hi I have a tapping noise coming from the engine.

it’s not temp dependent, it’s constant.

water level is good

oil level brilliant spot on.

I do have a video but file is too big to put on here.
any ideas what it could be?

any help would be fab it’s never for it before.

this is the video I have done on the engine noise.

I had this exact same noise from my 2017 1.6 diesel, I was on a long run engine packed up and was knackered. Turns out a valve lifter had siezed and broken up some of it entered the cylinder, and the piston and barrel was knacked. 90.000 miles, skoda wouldn't help so I let the car go for pennies. Annoying thing is it was such an easy fix if I had known before hand. I'm not saying that's your problem but it's an option

What’s the fix for it? may I ask?

This is my first diesel car.

I love this car to bits.

Unfortunately it might involve talking off the cylinder head to remove the valve lifter or minimum camshaft and cambelt and waterpump etc, but I ain’t no mechanic. Won’t be cheap.....

i like my 1.6TDi too

I have been to the garage and found out the problem with my car.

it’s a dual mass fly wheel issue.

and the parts are not available I have to wait.

The dual mass flywheel is between the flywheel and clutch and unless you’ve noticed a change in the quality of your gear changes, I would suggest that isn’t a dmf issue. I had a dmf go on an Octavia 2 and it was like a slipping clutch

 and went within 2-3 days....

But I’m no mechanic. I’d get a second opinion. Call me cynical, but a dmf change is a more expensive job.....

Slipping clutch is not a symptom or indication of a failing DMF, vibration and knocking are, a failing DMF does not significantly affect the quality of gearchanged, if it is knocking so badly to do so you would be more than aware of it at tickover and driving at low revs.

You may have had a worn clutch and any garage will replace the DMF with it as a matter of course, if you had ignored all the vibrations and knocking it is possible that the failed DMF could have damaged the clutch cover, its usually the drive straps between the cover and the drive ring that let go and not the diaphragm.

It happened on the 23rs December.

when turning the vehicle on the noise is there if I tap the clutch a tiny bit it stops.

there is no change in the gears.

but a vibration has started.

It would have been helpful if you'd mentioned this in your original post.

From my practice the octavia 1.6tdi does not have a two-mass flywheel. the picture is just an illustration

I have the same noise. Started happening in march. No mechanic wants to deal with this, they just ignore my request. Any ideas?? Solutions?

By the way, I have replaced my clutch, it doesn't have a DMF. Here's the recording of the ticking sound:
