Service Interval

Featured Replies

The 'Service in 1000 miles' warning popped up on the dashboard display this morning on my Octy. This means that when it goes into the dealer, it will have covered about 9350 miles since its last service approx 12 months ago.

I'm somewhat disappointed with this, as the car was reset to variable servicing at the last service, and I was hoping to get about 16-18k miles out of it before the next one.

I know when on variable servicing the car calculates when it needs a service based on type of usage, oil quality etc, but I thought my type & style of driving should be fairly gentle on the car. e.g. All, but one or two journeys a month are in excess of 20 miles between stops, no stop/start city driving - it's mostly travelling at a constant 50-60mph on rural A & B roads, no foot-to-the-floor driving. Only Castrol Longlife II oil used for top-ups.

Now, I'm not saying that the electronic gizmo that determines when the car needs a service doesn't know what it's doing, but at this rate it will cost me more per year to service my 2.0 Octy than my other car, a Nissan 350Z.

So, a couple questions:

1) Can the service computer or its sensors get it wrong?

2) I recently had an engine temp sensor replaced. Would this cause the service indicator to reset to Fixed Interval? (The 9350 miles seems just too close to the 15,000km / 9375 mile 'Fixed' Interval to be coincidence).

3) Is there anyway, other than VAG-COM, to determine what type of service interval the car is set to?

It was set incorrectly at the last service.
