Vehicle damaged whilst parked up

Featured Replies

Had my vehicle damaged ironically by someone at work in the work vehicle.

They parked up opposite my vehicle in a company van (same company I work for) got out and left the handbrake off; it then rolled across the road a smashed into my vehicle causing approximately £1000 of damage.

Initially my boss said he would sort it but now he has found out it is more expensive,  says he isn’t paying for it and it needs to go through the insurance. If this has a knock on my NCB , I will not be happy as I have managed 39 years without a claim, I wasn’t even in the vehicle, it was on a public highway not private land..

Do I need to get my insurance company involved and loose some of my NCB or can I just ring the company insurance company and explain I’m making a claim off them and not involve my insurance?

Hi.

You would need to notify your insurer regardless of whether you were claiming form your insurance. They may wish to keep the incident as open until such time as the third party insurer has settled your claim.

Regards,

Dan.

Thanks Dan for info; is this likely to affect my no claims at all or increase my next premium?

Whether you actually need to inform your insurance company depends on the terms and conditions detailed in your policy, which you should check carefully.

If you inform your insurance company that your car has been involved in an accident, it will always affect your renewal premium regardless of who was to blame and even if the third party pays for all repairs. It will also need to be declared when changing insurance companies when asking for a quote, usually for 3 to 6 years depending on the company.

The effect on your NCB should be detailed both in your renewal documents and your policy document. Depends on the company but if you have full NCB its unlikely to be affected.

Our advice would be to contact your insurance company to notify them of the incident. If you have details of the third party Insurer (the Insurer your company use) then pass those details on. Your insurer should be able to take care of the rest for you.

If the incident is settled as a non-fault incident then it will not impact your no Claims Bonus.
