Fabia VRS 06 mk1 Infrequent whistle noise.

Featured Replies

Hi All,

In Dec 2021, my car randomly started making an intermittent and very infrequent whistling noise, (just like a traditional kettle boiling, with a slight squeak effect).  I noticed it mainly did it on motorway and dual carriageway journeys, say between 50-70mph, coming from the engine bay, closer to the passenger side, after 15-20 mins into my journey.

The noise stopped for 3 months, and has just come back.

The car usually has a light load, e.g. just me in it driving, empty boot.  Accelerating/decelerating, changing gears don’t affect it.  The AC, blowers, radio etc are turned off.  This noise is not the same as the quieter nice sounding whistle the car makes when the turbo kicks in, it is loud enough to annoy.

Incase its a coincidence, 6 mths ago on startup, it intermittently made an almost chirping sound on startup, this noise now happens all the time, on startup only, not sure if there is a link between the two.

Any help would be much appreciated, so I can go to my mechanic with something.

Thanks

Sounds like a belt to me.

Get under the bonnet with the engine running and have a listen.

Could be cam belt tensioner , alternator or a/c (if fitted) pulley if it is clutched, perhaps

Thanks both,

That was actually what I thought when it happened the first time, but the 3 month delay made me think twice.  I'll look into it further, when I find a fix, I'll update this thread too.
