Do i simply put a new battery on. or does it have to be coded in after ?
Are you taking the whole battery cover off? There is a top cover that exposes the master fuses and a number of wires, this is latched to the main cover. There are two 'catches' for want of a better description. the bottom of the two expose the top of the battery and the two battery posts. In theory the way to jump start is connect to the positive (red) terminal and connect the negative to the earth connection at the body. Both terminals will work though. Sorry if this is teaching you to suck eggs but others may not know.

Rear caliper advice
These calipers have a habit of getting a bit crudded up and the handbrake mech' can seize up. You'll pick up a pair of new calipers cheaper/quicker than refurbing. Buy some Traffic Green caliper paint and you're good to go (assuming you have VRS green calipers that is).

Only cars with battery management and recharge need coding in, my 66 plate scirocco has it, wasn't a thing on Mk1's Just get a battery fo the same type e.g. 063 or whatever. I use Tayna batteries available on the bay of evil with next day delivery and good prices.

Heavy Knock When Turning.
The fact it happens when the wheel is turned suggests one of two things, CV joint or steering rack issue. Top mounts would knock on any rough surface, dog bone would knock on acceleration and decelartion when coming off throttle completely after accelerating. Dog bone is laterally loaded fore and aft. Does it do it both directions?

Rear caliper advice
As @sepulchravesays, no benefit in bigger pistons as the rears do very little work.

Last job on list.
In the factory workshop manual it shows the standard bushings have a moulded , I guess pimple is the best description , indicator (1) which you line up with a mark on the console (2). I assume as the TCA has a hexagon shaped locator this is to ensure the TCA sits in the correct orentation. Looking at the PSB it looks like it is has a small cut out on the edge of the inner material to align the same way?

Hi Davy, seems the Scots contingent is strong on here 🙂

Decat exhaust
De-cat is also an MOT fail these days as if fitted as O/E they have to be present. As said by others no point on a TD unless you've gone into Darkside Developments with a big wad of cash and asked them to fit everything from the performance upgrade packages available.

Fabia VRS 06 mk1 Infrequent whistle noise.
Get under the bonnet with the engine running and have a listen. Could be cam belt tensioner , alternator or a/c (if fitted) pulley if it is clutched, perhaps

Hello from the Land of Milk'N'Beans
Hi , yes Flamenco red indeed, heated seats, air con, parking sensors. All the stuff old people need! Car isn't here at home at the moment, stored at work as I have to sort parking of the fleet out first. I am doing some little mods to it such as slightly bigger wheels, 15", lower springs (-30mm) and uprate the brakes using Vrs hubs and calipers and a +30bhp re-map. But that can wait. I'm going for the OAP sleeper style I'm embracing the elderly theme so have a small nodding dog on order............

Hello from the Land of Milk'N'Beans
Hi all, just joined here as I've purchased the ultimate Grandad car. Having a bit of a commute to work means my 2.0litre 220ps daily is costing quite abit to use so Iwas looking for a cheap daily with decent mpg just to do the work run. I've picked up a 2006 Fabia 6Y TDI Elegance , 90k miles full history one owner. Its finished in what I believe is Flamanco Red. Full Grandad spec , which is quite coincedental as I am a Grandad, yes I know that makes me old but I am a young(ish) Grandad. I've also got in the fleet a 2016 Scirocco GTS, Porsche Boxster 3.2S and a Ford Galaxy for carting the grand offspring round when on Taxi diuties as well as an early Triumph Speed Triple for re-living my youth. Been messing about with cars and bikes for over 40 years, I did mention that I am old, so hope to be able to contribute as well as learn form the site.
