Glow plug sign suddenly showed up and engine stalled

So I was nearly home after a 20minute journey from work when suddenly Glow plug sign showed up on dash and car engine stopped and wouldn't start. So I pulled to the side and had to tow it to my garage. Could anyone guide me to the problem. The glow plug sign is turning on and off after 1-2secs but engine won't turn. Skoda octavia mk2 vrs 2007 2.0 with approx 53000km on the clock 

The glow plug light is a general warning and the reason for it is stored in memory. You need to have the fault code read using a reader or tow it to a garage for them to read the fault code and suggest the repair action.

 

Were there any prior symptoms that could be signs of a failing battery?

I have just changed the battery 3 months ago, few days before Christmas and she has been driven ever since with no probs, so I don't know if its a battery issue. However dpf turned on twice and I drove the car on 3rd gear at 2000-2500rpm at 60kmph until it didn't show up according to manual. I do not know if it has anything to do with the problem, I'm just saying. 

I'm guessing since you mentioned the DPF your car is a PD170?  If that's the case it could be injector related, it was a known issue for PD170 Siemens injectors to fail and there was a recall at the time for it, if your car has had the recall done there should be sticker in the boot by the spare wheel well.  That injector failure fits your symptoms as it caused the engine to shut off entirely.

 

As pikpilot said though, fault codes are the only way to know for sure.

So this morning the mechanic came to my garage with diagnostic and as you said pointed out an short circuit on on of the injectors. But which one he doesn't know. Will keep you updated and I will check the boot if the case that they haven't been changed do I have the right to go at the local skoda dealer? Many thanks 

It's worth ringing a Skoda dealer to ask at least, give them your reg/VIN and see what they say - if it hasn't been done then you should be able to have it done for free.  I think if you put your reg in on the MOT history website that should tell you about outstanding recalls too.

 

I thought that the fault code would tell you which injector was the culprit but if not then it can be checked fairly easily - remove the cam cover and check the resistance across each injector using a multimeter.  Hopefully you can do this without unplugging the connectors in the injectors as they are quite difficult to remove without shattering them.

So I never got back to you guys on updating you and alot has happened ever since. So it was injector #3 that had a faulty sensor and my mechanic said they are not repaired here in Malta, so he had to fetch me an injector locally which costed me €480 and €100 labour. In mid September it happened again (glow plug light turned on and off) but I managed to drive back to my garage. In the morning she did not want to turn. Got the mechanic again and guess what injector #4. Now guys do you know if my old injectors can be refurbished in UK, because on Ebay I found that you send in your buy refurbished injectors and then you send yours and they refund you some money. Thanks
