Rear wiper - how many times should it sweep?

Featured Replies

Know about the crazy wiper operation but how many times should it sweep when you push the lever back once?

mine gets stuck then carries on for 12 sweeps or so.

garage checked out the motor and no water leak etc.

any idea what else could be going on or is this normal operation?

cheers!

Normal operation.

With a quick blip and return on the switch arm it should sweep once then stop. If you keep the arm in the on position it repeats the single sweeps roughly about every10 seconds until the arm is brought back again.

If the feature is enabled, it will give multiple single sweeps of the rear wiper whilst the car is in reverse and auto wipers on the front screen has detected rain.

Yours may be a failed switch on the control arm.

Normal on my car is: pushing stalk activates rear screen wash and wiper for as long as pushed + 4 wipes and just 4 wipes if pushed briefly.  Pushed and set on gives an intermittent wipe.

As previously mentioned the rear wiper activates on selecting reverse gear if the front auto sensing wipers are on and detect rain.

Thanks.

I get the wipe in reverse.

It just seems to sweep too many times.

Is there a limit switch or anything which would make it continue to sweep if the arm doesn’t hit the switch?

If it’s the stalk arm then everything else seems to work.

Perhaps a scan would pick up if there's an electrical signal issue, test by activating via diagnostic software.

No codes were stored when last scanned but good idea 👍

The motor is diagnosed as working and it’s a wiring issue.

Can you buy a replacement boot lid grommet and wiring to replace the factory wiring if the issue is due to wire fatigue from running?

Currently pulled the fuse to stop it annoying me!

Given the symptoms its unlikely to be the wiring but every chance that it is the canbus node contained within the motor, mine did very similar weird things before changing the motor unit, I had freed the brushes and the motor spindle a couple of times, that always resolved the slow running or sticking but the crazy behaviour was the controller within the unit.

Interesting - not sure how to prove the Halfords mechanic wrong and get it done under warranty. Would it throw error codes?

First thing would be to take it to a good independant VAG garage who have trained mechanics not halfrauds 🐵

As usual the slow drip drip feed of relevant information finally reveals itself.

We can now deduce that the vehicle is under warranty and that the OP is being given the run around probably by the dealer who sold him the car and who is responsable, binning him off to a warranty company who have no incentive whatsoever to fix the fault and who have a contract with Halfrauds to carry out inspections and to say there is no fault.

If you bought the car recently and it is still under warranty put pressure only on them, its not your job to be proving a Halfords employee wrong, just that your car is not functioning correctly.

That said it would have been more honest of them if they had simply said, "the wipers work on slow and fast, we are not spending any time or money on an erratic single sweep function, - sling your hook!"

Similar symptoms as my two failed ones, in-fact I’m in the process of ordering another unit.

I’ve just pulled the fuse as not fussed.

Interestingly, was at the Skoda dealership today and they said there is an issue with the rear wiper and they need to order a new motor. They never checked the fuse!

They probably decided that course of action based on previously stored fault codes.
