Octavia gearbox whine

Featured Replies

Hi guys, newbie to the site and first Skoda owned so please  excuse me if the question I am about to ask has already been covered in previous posts.

I have just purchased a 2018 plate Octavia 1.6 TDI with 40,000 miles on the clock and notice I am getting a slight gearbox whine in all gears between 40-50mph.

My friend who was a mechanic suggests it could be the output shaft in the gearbox but it is only a guess and  suggests I ask the members of this forum for any advice.

Maybe a gearbox oil change would help but slightly concerned it would need done with such a low mileage !

Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Agreed with the diagnosis that if it is present in all gears and not just the intermediate gears then it rules out the layshaft bearings and first motion shaft but what makes you believe that the noise is coming from the gearbox and not the differential?

Hi J.R,

Thanks for replying so quickly.

Like I said the gearbox was the first thought we came to but as you mention the diff could be the source of the noise.

What advice would you suggest if indeed it is a diff gear issue, a trip to Skoda for a full diagnosis ?

Welcome.

Maybe best a visit to an Automatic Gearbox specialist or a VW Independent near you because any Skoda Dealership near you are not cheap for a diagnosis or any repair / remedial work.

Not that near but not far.
