2014 CUPA 184 TDI Oil Consumption

Featured Replies

Morning guys, sorry for another oil consumption thread!

I’ve been tracking the top ups for the last couple of thousand miles and it’s around 0.8L per 1000 miles give or take, I’m sure I was going around 2.5/3k last summer but wasn’t really tracking it. My DPF is regenerating a lot as well.

My mileage is made up mainly of steady cruise controlled motorway miles, prob 90% of it. It’s just ticked over 106k miles.

Now with such a high consumption and no outward signs of a leak, scuttle tray is dry. I’m thinking that most likely fault a piston has given way and either needs new rings or a brand new piston assembly. I haven’t got a compression tester to check, but I just have a feeling.

My main question is for someone with a bit of engine rebuild knowledge, can you get to the pistons without craning the whole engine out? Just remove the head gasket and lock the cams?

Also are there any good garages in the NW that wouldn’t charge an absolute fortune to take this on, or a NW based member with some expertise in stripping these down?

I really like the car, would like to keep it for another year or two at least. Don’t mind getting my hands dirty and have a double garage to play in, but also don’t want to trash the timing and completely write it off.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated 👍🏻

Rob.

Depending where you are in the Northwest. Volkservice Blackpool are excellent and VAG specialists.

Mine uses about the same now on 88000 miles. I think if the car drives fine it is cheaper to just buy more oil. That is what I am doing until it shows signa of a failure.

Looking at other threads people have spent thousands and changed turbochargers, pcv valve in the cylinder head cover, new piston and piston rings. I think one person fitted slighlty larger piston rings and this reduced the oil consumption.

Exactly what @Ecomatt said. It’s not worth the money. Just add oil if there is no significant power loss or failure.

I had an A4 with such issues and spent a lot of money for turbo, pcv, valve stem seals, piston rings, etc. The consumption was decreased, but not as expected. I was  adding 1 liter per 2000 miles after the rebuild.

Was driving like that 60-70k miles like that with no other issues. Finally it did a hole in the piston most likely due to injector failure at 200k miles.

Just drive it, this engine is known for its oil consumption.

Thanks for the replies 👍🏻

I suppose you’re both right thinking about it, it’s just so disappointing as I love the car but the niggling thought at the back of my mind that the engine could give way does my head in.

If I could do the work myself I might have a go at stripping it, I just don’t want to open a can of worms by messing anything else up when I actually need the car to run.

So if it runs good and you have no other issues except the oil consumption, just drive it and have the habit to add oil every 1000 miles. Don’t drive it without oil…

  • 1 month later...

Rather than start another oil topic I have dropped in on this one.

I went to do my oil change last month and put in engine cleaner. Only after that I got the oil out of the box and realised that the wrong oil had been delivered. I ordered Miller Oils 5w 30 but had been sent 5w 40. I was at the point of no return as I had already put in the engine cleaner in so had to use the 5w 40. I checked it would be safe to use with the dpf and as it was mid saps and not full saps it was dpf safe. I know VW say the oil must be low saps but the Millers Oil 5w 30 has the 'meets 507 spec' with the mid saps.

I contacted the shop and they were understanding and sorted me with the correct oil. I had planned to swap the oil the following week but weather and work prevented me. I only put in the 5 litres as I already had top up Millers in the garage. So far after 1300 miles of driving the oil light has not come on for top up. The oil level has barely budged where as with the 5w 30 spec oil, I would have to top up after about 700 miles. The dpf is not filling up any quicker and economy has not dropped with the thicker oil. It makes me wonder if these engines should have been run on 40 weight oil rather that trying to be too economical and running on a thinner oil?

They are running on Long Life oil for variable or fixed servicing which is really what Fleets want.  The 5w 40 full synthetic oil you have in is not long life is it.  VW 502 00 rather than the VW 504 00 / 507 00 they have recommended / specced.

It isnt VW longlife but is BMW longlife and is what is usually put in the PD engines. But it does make me think that the 30 weight oil is too thin for the engine. Since putting in the 40 weight it has hardly used any oil at all compared to when the 30 weight was in.

Thank you for sharing your experience!

In relation to that, i have some questions:

How do you feel the engine with the 5w40 oil in? Is it smoother? Any strange behavior?

Are you planning to keep using the 5w40 oil, if the oil consumption is small?

What is your mileage on the odometer?

Best Regards,

Mihai

If the car runs fine, the dpf is not clogging then the 5w 40 FS to VW502 00 is perfectly fine.

VW Group went to 5w30 FS III much the same as now for WLTP / RDE they went 0w 20 FS IV.   Get the emissions / economy.  But then Euro 5 TDI's they cheated anyway.

Then there was the other cheat that is supposedly a Internet Myth about the old tests.

They sometimes put diesel in the engine oil of the cars that had covered 3,000 km before they were on the Rolling Road getting tested.

The engine runs fine and is quiter once upto temp. No strange behaviour or higher oil temps etc. I will put 5w 30 back in at some point purely because I prefer to have the correct grade in. I just havent gottent around to it yet with work and getting ready for our 2nd child who should be born in about 4 weeks or so.

I've the same engine on 86k and use about 0.5l per 6k miles. Dpf has defo started to regen more. Looked at my last invoices from Skoda main dealer, looks like they were putting 5w30 in until the last service when it appears to have changed to 0w30!?

Yes, VW started to use 0w30 instead of 5w30 in the last couple of years or even more. This is the trend, car manufacturers have to meet more ecological requirements and by using thinner oil car consumes slightly less and therefore produces less emissions.

That shouldn't worry you any way because both oils meet the required standards for your car 504/507.00. Plus 0w30 should provide slightly better consumption and wear protection especially when cold. Both behave similarly when the engine is running on its operating temperature.

-----------

0w30 has less ash compared to proposed 5w40, but will more likely be burnt more than 5w40 filling the DPF even more, especially when there are issues with the oil rings.

Your consumption of 0,5l per 6k is pretty normal and I would stick with 0w30 meeting 504/507.00.

Actually.  back on Earth and not a fictional VW world.

There is no evidence of any kind that 0w 30 FS III uses LESS OIL than 5 w 30 FS  III

or now that 0w 20 FS IV uses less oil than 5w 30 FS III did.

What there is is the WLTP & RDE now RDE2 and supposedly lower emissions and less fuel consumed.

Actually over the past years many have been using more engine oil, but then that is not part of the WLTP / RDE 2 so VW Group care not if some are like 2 strokes in how much oil used.
