RNS 510 Issues

Featured Replies

Hi,

This is my first post on here, having bought a 2011 Fabia VRS only 2 months ago. I've been doing work on the car to try and nurse it back to optimum health and condition, and this has included fitting an RNS 510 unit in exchange of the Android unit which was in the car when I bought it. I know originally it had the Bolero stereo, so I don't think it's ever had a GPS antenna fitted. I have just unlocked the unit and have found that the radio stations do not work, the GPS and ordinary map functions do not work, and the reverse sensors (which are aftermarket) also do not register on it (they used to have a visual aid on the old system). Does anyone know what I need to buy/fit/do in order to get these bits to work on it? If any further information is needed to answer, I will do my best but I'm afraid I'm not too tech savvy, nor am I a mechanic or autoelectrician of any kind.

Thank you in advance to anyone who provides any help/tips etc. I will be writing a couple more posts as I have a few other issues with the car to be addressed, so if you could be so kind as to check them out as well, I would be very grateful and very much obliged to you.

All the best.

it would have had a swing radio, not bolero.

First thing, have "you" fitted a GPS antenna ? if so where ?

The car will need coding with VCDS or similar to tell it a Navigation is installed so all the parking display etc works, However I am unsure "if" and aftermarket system will display on the unit........ It all does work on the RNS 510 as I had one in mine. I don't "think" the coding will affect the radio working, but as I had already originally had an RNS315 installled, the coding was set when I fitted the RNS 510, so it may well do.

I will be honest I could never get the RNS 510 to sound good, it lacked depth and bass completely and I spent hours with all the coding options to no avail, put an RNS 315 back in eventually and the sound difference is astonishing (even the wife noticed / commented)  so you will have to see if you like it when it's working.

That's the one, don't know where I got the idea of it being the Bolero from.

No, I haven't fitted an antenna of any kind. I still don't actually know what type I need, as I've seen many different types online (including some in sharkfin cases which imo look better but i dont know if they'd work).

I presume I will have to go to a Skoda main dealer for that then?

Was that with keeping the sound system standard? Tbh, I found the same with the android unit that was in the car when I got it, but i put it down to it being stock speakers. So I may end up upgrading them too, the stock speakers sound very weak and wirey imo, with no bass or breathing room in the frequencies.

I recently had the RNS510 fitted into my Fabia 1.2 TSi elegance and it came with a GPS module similar the the one below, we took out the indash glovebox & secured the GPS to the metal bar that secures the dashboard etc (bulkhead bar?) using the magnetic back & fed the cable through to the radio area... instantly we had a good signal & NAV reported our location correctly. all stations work nicely although im sure there is a setting for HDaudio somewhere in the settings that will bring clarity to radio stations.

FYi the price of the unit can vary but as long as it says it fits & has a blue connector like pictured im sure you'll be fine.

hope this helps

I forgot to mention : amazon & ebay all have the module listed, just search for RNS510 GPS module

The link to the antenna above will work fine, thats what skoda supply with the RNS315 aftermarket kit, and as mentioned put it inside the dash and all is good for GPS.

The standard radio antennas already in the car should work fine.

Is it DAB ? if so you will need an additonal antenna for that, OR fit a factory AM, FM GPS, DAB, GSM shark fin on the roof in place of the existing antenna and run the cables to the headunit.

Regarding the sound system, the factory speakers are pretty good, they just need a good unit to drive them, the RNS 315 has brilliant sound "imo"
