Gearbox oil leak

Featured Replies

Barely 12 months old and now we have a second warranty issue. The first was the air conditioning which was not working and required a new compressor.

Now there is an oil leak behind the gearbox. This requires dismantling, assessment of the problem and possibly new parts. It is currently Thursday so we have been advised that it could be Monday before the car is back.

Does anyone have experience of a similar oil leak problem behind the gearbox? I am fascinated to know the answer.

Of course, this ignores the inconvenience caused but being retired it is not so much of an issue but a few years back, it would have been then.

@Practicaldriver What engine and gearbox does your car have and how many miles has it done?

Kodiaq 2.0 TSI 190 Sport Line 4x4 5dr DSG

8,992 miles

Just been informed that the garage want it for a week! A week!

Courtesy car arranged of similar flexibility (Superb Estate, Hum.) so we cannot really complain about that, but this does intrigue me hence the question. Furthermore, will a similar problem appear when the warranty expires but that is for another day.

The week is not because they are working on it a week,

it might be them looking at it some hour next Wednesday.

You have the remainder of the Manufacturers warranty only.

Then you could go with an Extended Warranty.

If between now and then there were further issues then that would be when you discus with Skoda / VW them extending the warranty.

Time will tell where the leak is.

if a MCU in needed, or a new DSG or DSG & Mechatronic Control Unit or something else altogether.

@Practicaldriver

Just nosy but had your car already had the engine cover removed when in for the AC or recently were you told about the recall on that and had it removed?

Rebooked in for a week  commencing 27 July. Flat battery, failed a/c and now this. In all the years of owning Skodas, and I reckon it is 6 cars, we have had only 1 previous issue, a switch on our Roomster's heating controls! Cannot fault dealer but they do need more parking space!!

@Practicaldriver

Does that mean you are just to drive it meantime without the source of the leak being known?

I just posted late before you.

Has the Engine Cover been taken off your car due to the Recall?

It will be the 4x4 angle drive transfer box, it will only need an O ring replacing but they will fill their boots with a new unit possibly an entire new transmission because they dont list individual components, only the whole drive unit.

Roottoot does me a confuse. At the start of June we had the car serviced, it's first service after circa 9,000 miles. Afterwards we noticed that the a/c did not work and since we were going touring with dogs had the car booked in for it to be replaced at short notice. The service report noted the leak and so we booked car in again for that which is where we are now. Nothing mentioned to us about any recall.

We drove car for a fortnight after leak was reported at service interval and after a/c fix. I assume car is being picked up by my wife who has cycled to dealer and we will return it on 25th July. References to cover confuse me - is that the bonnet!!

JR I too am cynical but have no evidence of course.

P.s. Leak small, no evidence on drive but there is a cover under engine which would catch it I would imagine. Fact car booked in for 3 weeks time confirms this. I hope!!

@Practicaldriver

Sorry the cover question was a different thing.

Just to know if the Dealership is on the ball.

There is a Safety Recall on the Cover of 2.0 TSI engines and the solution was to remove them until there are replacements.

Maybe yours not part of it, or checked and considered safe.

Shows for 2020 & 2021.

That's because it's a recall on the new facelift version - and I'm guessing that yours is probably an 'old' one if you've had it almost 12 months already?

Old dealer stock and so is over 12m old. We have known mechanic for years and our instincts say trust him. Lively man. Apparently he is fascinated by leak and by booking it in for a week gives him time to dismantle things, order parts as required and reassemble within a generous time frame. Superb Estates are fine by us. Two goldies fit in nicely.

Good then if the technician is identifying the problem, repair and if an issue that needs Skoda / VW alerted to that can happen.

After 4 days we have her back. Broken gearbox seals. What does that mean? How can they break? Anyhow, job done. For now.

We had a Superb Estate as a courtesy car and I cannot believe how low it is to get into or how easy it is too bump your shoulder getting in. Is it me or am I getting older?

It appears my 2022 Kodiaq RS is suffering from a similar issue. A lot of oil all over the side of the engine that meets the gearbox. Oil is dripping on my driveway as well (how I noticed the issue). Skoda service weren’t able to find the source of the leak, so I have to wait until mid-Jan until they can have it for more time to ‘investigate’. Literally looks like someone has poured oil inside the engine bay and undercarriage 😞 I’m feeling regret…

All that oil and they weren't able to determine where it was coming from?

Have they put you in a replacement vehicle? Will they be offering to cover the cost of steam cleaning your driveway?

  • 4 weeks later...

It’s going in to the service department for the third time tomorrow.
Initially they thought it was a loose oil cooler, but the issue remains. It appears to be differential oil given the fluid is a light yellow colour. Vehicle is also making a horrible whining sound now and a clunking sound (probably because it has no lubricant), so I haven’t been driving it.
Doesn’t appear I will receive a courtesy car even after emailing Skoda (VW) Australia, who took no responsibility and simply said I should deal direct with the dealership.

I’ll wait and see if I get a loan car tomorrow, but I doubt it.
This has been an awful experience, particularly given I paid for the 7 year service pack and warranty. VW Australia are selling these vehicles at a premium price while offering no support.
Buyer beware.

So their delay at properly diagnosing the oil leak has resulted in a failed DSG gearbox?

Surely the car should be at the dealer whilst they put you in a courtesy car?
