Rapid Spaceback rolling when in 'park'

Featured Replies

I got a 2016 Rapid Spaceback 1.2 DSG just over a week ago to replace my previous 2014 Seat Leon DSG. My driveway is on a slight incline. The other day, I put the car into 'park' and briefly took my foot off the brake as I was about the apply the handbrake. I was shocked that the car rolled forward picking up momentum - it wasn't just a few inches. I've tested the same in a few different locations and the same happens. I always apply the handbrake anyway, but am concerned that the DSG selector being in 'park' does not provide the secondary protection I thought it should. Also, my Seat Leon DSG did not do this (and also had a traditional handbrake). Is this normal? It doesn't seem as though it is to me. I've been in touch with the dealer who so far have told me to try with the ignition off and see whether it happens too - which it does. Any insights appreciated!

Well, clearly the Park pawl isn't locking the transmission properly. Why this is is a question for an automatic transmission specialist, not a Skoda main stealer.

Other than that, there's an issue of technique; why are you putting the transmission into Park before you apply the handbrake?

P and the drive wheels locked is not secondary protection.  It is the purpose of being in P / park so if broken needs fixed.  Holding the car on steep slopes and no Parking brake applied and just reliant on the Pawl is an issue and can become and expensive. One.  The owners manual always covered that.

Parking pawl or associated parts are obviously damaged or broken. Unfortunately this only happens if abused/poor technique, either by yourself or the previous owner. Was the vehicle purchased from a dealer? If you only bought it a week ago take it straight back for repair, should be some sort of warranty (3 months) even if a used purchase. If it was a private purchase then unfortunately you are going to have a bit of a repair bill coming your way.
When parking on level ground it doesn’t matter a hoot if you select park first then handbrake or vise-versa. However on steep     ground it makes a huge difference to do it in the correct order. Or if your impatient and slam the car into park before you have 100% come to a halt will have the same wear and tear result.

Welcome.

Sorry that when on a phone i did not see you were a new member.

?

Who at a dealership tried to pan you off, were they a salesperson, the service desk or did you or they speak to a technician?

It is down to them to have the car fit for purpose and check out if a fault and then to rectify.
