Octavia Plastic Dash Question - 7" TFT Location?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I've just finished sticking all the hardware & software together to get my carputer working on the bench, and now need to stick it all into the car.

I've been trying to work out where to put the 7" TFT touch Screen that drives it all, as the original location (stereo dual DIN slots ) are too low, and i keep hitting it when i change gear :/

So i'm now staring at the bit of plastic dash directly above the center console, similar to the map pocket in the new mazda 6's

Does anybody know what is underneath this, or if there is enough space to do it? I need a rectangle 20cm x 13cm by 4 cm deep.

For security purposes it's also helpful as the screen gets hidden and no-body knows it's there!

Oh - and i've already sourced a new full dash piece for

I was thinking of a screen to pair with my DVD head unit (that doesnt have an integrated screen). Not sur eif your screen is a fold out one, but I was going to move the head unit to the lower DIN and put the screen in the upper DIN.

ColinD's carputer runs a screen in this position and it works nicely.

A pop-out screen in the dash itself would be pretty cool though.

The screen i've got is a plain old linitx ( lilliput) screen that doens't fold out as i was going to remove all signs of a standard HU and replace it all with the carputer and screen ( including radio ) .

However, with it that far down, looking at the screen for GPS guidance is a real danger as my eyes have to move a long way to look at the screen, which i don't want.

The other option, is of course, the fold-out xenarc screens, but that'll put the screen over the petrol tank button, rear window heater buttons and bring the screen out of the dash again which i'll hit, and only move the screen up 1DIN slot, which isn't as much as i'd like.

I was going to motorise the display with a button somwhere, so that it becomes "fold-out" in the new place - if it's feasable!

Do a foldout from the position of the standard HU, like the Pioneer Avic?

Do you mean you want to put it above the air vents?

You could probably remove the air vents entirely and direct the air towards the side vents.

You could then cut a section out of the top of the dash and hinge it to lift up and have the screen slide up.

The dash top would then also act as a surround for the screen to protect it from glare ;)

Trying to avoid removing the air vents cos those that get to sit behind me like some air going straight down the center of the car. However, i have thought about it, but haven't had the time to pull that much of the center console apart to see what's feasable.

Aye, part of the task if hinging it would be to produce a screen around it - edgeing with plastic to kill sunlight would be needed.

I agree with you that the screen is too low, that is where I have mine, but for gps I listen to the direction most of the time rather than look...

If you want to have a look behind the air vents very simple job, pop out the panel around the hazard switch with a thin screwdriver, then pull out the button. disconnect and then you can put your fingers in the hole and pull the vents out. You will find that directly behind them is the ducting, and a few other bits, so might be difficult to put a fold out screen there.

You could always mod the vents so smaller pipe goes round the outside of the screen, then motorise it so it pops straight up, using something like a linear actuator or an old cd mechanism...

Hard to explain but could work...

Aye, i nominally use sounds as well, but some of the time stuck in traffic it's nice to be able to look at the map to see alternatives locally without going through the rigmarole (sp?) of finding alternative....

I was wondering how the hazard switch came out - as it might be easier to move all of that lot around a little. I'll have a play next weekend - i need a road safe car this week as i've got loads of driving to do.

Aye, hard to explain, but i know what you mean and i've got an old cdrom here just for that purpose.. :)

If you come up with a neat mounting solution please let me know - i'm stuck with the same problem at the moment - Lilliput 7" screen, but nowhere to mount it!

I've not bought all the rest of the harware yet, as I decided that unless I could get the screen location looking like part of the stock interior, and stealthy, I wasn't going to bother - I love the look of the fold-up pocket you've linked to.

Did buy a Kenwood all in one dvd player / touchscreen / reciever, but only had it in the car for two days before I decided that I didn't like having

hi, people

I'm interest in your idea. I'm thinking about to use a carputer in my new Octavia II RS. I it could be a great idea to locate de TfT touchscreen in the upper side of de dash.

Have you ever seen it before, in an Octavia II?

Is It posible??

Sorry for my English, I'm Spanish
