Advice please - Tyre speed rating - 2015 2.0 L Tdi SE (Front Wheel drive)

Featured Replies

I need to have two new tyres fitted to my Yeti.  Currently I have 2 X Michelin Primacy 4 (225X55 R17 98Y) fitted to the front wheels.  I want to add another set of Primacy probably on the front and move the existing tyres to the rear, good idea or not?

Also when I look at websites and enter the reg they recommend W speed rating.  If I recall correctly the garage did not have W last time and fitted the Y rating.  Is the W the official  rating for the car and if so can I fit them with the other set being a Y rating, or should I just pay a bit more for the Y rating?

I also tried to find the manufacturers recommended rating and could not see it in the manual or documentation I have.  I assume W rating is correct?

I hope that they are not 225x550 R17's

I know it's a typo, but picturing you looking like wacky racers.

If the book says W speed rating, then this is the standard, you can fit higher rated, but I wouldn't go as far as to pay extra for the higher speed rating.

Regularly running on a German Autobahn, then maybe.

Thanks for the info. Looking at prices there is only about £20 difference so may be better just having the Y all round.

This also popped up in a search just now so posting it if it hels others

Only thing I would check, is the book is 225/50

You have 225/55 fitted?

If so, at least the car goes faster.

Jokes aside, best verify what should be fitted with dealer and try to stick with correct profile if possible.

If the top speed of your car is more than 190km/h (118mph) but not more than 210km/h (130mph) then H-speed rated tyres are legal.

Over-specifying tyres, such as fitting V, W, Y, etc. when your car doesn't go over 130mph will make the ride unnecessarily harder. The tyres will also be heavier which has a negative effect on fuel consumption.

Over-specifying tyres, such as using XL (eXtra Load) when SL (Standard Load) will do, is also not a good idea for the same reasons as above.

It's legal to over-specify tyres and sometimes necessary if the minimum specification isn't available in the tyre size that you want to fit.

Bear in mind that in the UK the speed limit is never more than 70mph (even on motorways), so even tyres rated at 120km/h (75mph) may be legal. You can check the guidance for MOT testers on the government website for further information. However, it's quite rare for car tyres to be sold with a speed rating lower than T, ie. 190km/h (118mph).
