Uh Oh - Clutch problems

Featured Replies

20 miles from home yesterday after two weeks of touring the country, pulled in to the queue for the M6 toll and when I went to pull away LOTS of juddering from the clutch 😞 Symptoms:

  • Uneven bite point (this had been happening for a number of months tbh but I put it down to my imagination / ignored it.
  • Lots of judder that is uneven, worse in lower gears but is happening through all the gears to a certain degree
  • Rattling noise with clutch fully disengaged, worse at lower revs, i.e. 1200 to 1500 rpm
  • Vibration through clutch pedal near the 'top' of the clutch travel when in neutral

It had a new sump a few weeks ago as the plug had corroded, probably not relevant.

1.4 TSi manual, 108k miles. What's the prognosis? Thanks

Any ideas folks? Doing a bit of reading around could this be engine mounts, contamination from the recent oil leak?

Obviously waiting for the garage to open on Monday morning, bit nervous about driving it down there if it's a DMF problem, I don't want to make things any worse as the car is now not worth much anyway.

Only the fact that the sump has been removed makes me advance this hypothesis but all that you describe could be symptoms of worn crankshaft thrust bearings which unless they have been fitted backwards never seems to happen these days.

Easy to check, have someone operate the clutch with the engine idling while you watch the crankshaft pulley for any fore and aft movement.

No idea how a sump change could cause the thrust bearings to fail.

I have always had manuals and once  experienced similar symptoms on a Kia people mover where two or three of the pawls on the spring had broken. Fortunately it was replaced under warranty.

I think the 1.4tsi manual group spring is of similar design so may be a possibility?

Never heard of a spring having pawls, what spring are you referring to?

Not the reply you want - seems like your DMF and /or clutch are dying. Bit more expensive than engine mounts - which tend to be single clonk type noises as you go on/off power.

No you wouldn't because I used the wrong terminology 😞. Sorry.

This was nearly twenty years ago and the head mechanic at the dealers showed me the removed item which normally had a circular pattern of arms on the clutch body providing pressure to the clutch plates and two or three were broken.  Really nice guy, we were on first name terms due to the number of issues the car had.

Started with a bit of clutch juddering and then got a lot worse and then clutch slip occurred as I recall.

Edit: Pressure plate was the description I was looking for 🤦‍♂️

I understand now, pressure plate fingers.

Sounds like it needs a new clutch and flywheel tbh

my own flywheel on my elegance 4x4 has just started to knock/rattle when the engine is  hot and clutch is fully disengaged, to the untrained ear it just sounds like its hunting/ misfiring with a rough idle, but put even the slightest pressure on the pedal it all goes quiet.

But for the sake of checking have someone put their foot on the clutch as you watch the flywheel pulley for any movement, if it moves check the pulley itself for play and if none there its crank related

if no moment on pulley side its clutch related.

Took it to the garage today, would you believe that 500 yards from the garage there seemed to be a bit of clutch slip, a bit of a burning smell and then... it was absolutely fine (or as fine as a car with 108k on the clock can be).

Sheepishly let a mechanic have a drive and he said it did feel like the flywheel was on it's way out and they quoted £875 all in for the flywheel and clutch kit.

Not sure what to do now. As I've been saying for about the last 2 years 'I'll probably change it soon'

Yep, this is what it's doing.

You might have to reassess its worth in the current 2nd hand market. The appreciated value may merit the repair cost?

Yep, this is what it's doing.

Mines a 14 plate on 128k, paid £8k at the start of the year for it which is £3k over what it was worth 12 months previously, and prices are still climbing.

its a no brainier really time fora new clutch and flywheel in my case and I'd say the same for yours.

Mine wont be £875 however being the 4x4 version 😬

Had mine done in April. 2015 scout with 117k on the clock. For the clutch, DMF and a gearbox oil change £1300. Not the cheapest, but not as expensive as going to a main dealer.

Where was that may I ask?

Main dealer has quoted over £2200

Mr Clutch is quoting £850.59 but no mention of the flywheel so I doubt they have done as I asked on the inquiry form to quote for a 4x4

A place called Straightline Performance in Malvern. I’ve been using them for about 4 years. Not necessarily the cheapest, however I have never had any issue with the work done, and they have always been upfront with any problems (not that I’ve had many so far.. touch wood). They have done several of the important jobs, like the timing and water pump as well as the clutch.
