1.8 TSI shutdown noise

Featured Replies

Hi, hoping you can help.

I’ve a 2014 1.8TSi with 40k miles. Recently in the hot weather there been a noticeable ticking/ clicking from the front of the engine when shutdown. It runs for a few minutes then stops. Whatever It is, it doesn’t sound healthy. It’s not the fans, but seems to be on front of engine. I’m guessing it’s a water circulation pump, but not sure. I’ve spent quite some time on Google trying to find out what it may be, but so far haven’t found the correct search phrase. I can’t even find a manual to download  or even an exploded engine diagram.
I’ve tried to replicate the noise, turning off the air con to stop the fans & idling the car till warm & then shutting down, but with no success.
The car has been so reliable, I’ve shamefully never properly looked round the engine bay to identify all the parts.

Is this a regular failure on this engine?

  Many thanks

      Mike

I think this engine has an "Electric Engine Auxiliary Water / Electric Circulation Pump"

I think my 1.4tsi also has something similar - however like you I've not needed to explore the engine bay thus far.

Thank you for the reply. I'm thinking it has one too, but not sure where it’s located & haven’t found it anywhere obvious. I can’t seem to get the noise to replicate at the moment, plus I’ve failed t find a diagram showing engine parts.

I've bought the VW Golf Haynes manual that has my 1.4 tsi engine in it and most bits are the same. I'm not sure which one would be suitable for the 1.8tsi - VW Passat?

I have a 1.6 TDI which has allways 'ticked' ~3 times on shutdown but recently has started ticking rhythmically all the time the engine is running.

I've had a chat with a couple of people and the current working theory is that the EGR is the culprit.

I cant say I know the 1.8tsi, so this may or may not be relevant, but what you've described does sound similar.

I'm not sure the 1.8tsi even has an EGR valve? - I think this function is carried out via the variable valve timing.
