New Octavia - niggles and questions...

Featured Replies

Picked up my new (21 plate) Octavia SE L Estate on Monday, changing from a 63 plate MkIII.

Apologies in advance but I'm going to post my niggles and questions (so far) here as I've not been able to find an answer elsewhere:

  • Screen brightness (centre display) - drove it in the dark for the first time last night, I have the map on the centre display, it was hellish bright! There doesn't appear to be an auto-dim feature and the only option is to manually turn down the brightness through the menu? I know I can replace the map with something else, e.g. the Radio widget, but that bright orange Radio 2 logo is going to be blinding me instead!
  • Satnav night mode - similar issue, in the MkIII you could change the satnav to night mode so it used a darker palette, not an option?
  • Wing mirrors - I seem to have to readjust them everytime I get in the car. Assume this is something to do with personalisation / memory functions. I've not sorted out Skoda Connect yet, will this help, or is this one of the many software niggles?
  • Android Auto, says I need to connect with a cable (which has just arrived), thought this would be Bluetooth. Not 100% sure I'm going to use it but the consensus seems to be that it's worth using over the built-in functions.
  • Minor niggle, I preferred the SD card in the glove box over the USB stick in the centre console for my music.

Other than that it's a lovely car, quiet and comfortable, the ACC seems to work well and will be really useful for me as I do a lot of motorway driving. Loving my sunroof too so not all bad.

I can't answer all the queries, but in terms of the sat nav mine goes into night mode when the headlights turn on.  Can't remember at the moment if I had to enable that (had the car over 20 months now and probably fiddled with something months ago!), but if I have Google Maps up on the centre console it also goes into night mode at the same point.

I think I turned my screen brightness right down ages ago - I prefer a dimmer display and even on low it's quite bright.  Might be an auto dim function - my previous Superb certainly changed the dashboard illumination automatically and that was a fairly basic spec car.

I have a 2021 vRS and can't say i've ever had a problem with screen brightness and don't think i've ever changed anything.

My Android Auto is wireless but not sure if SE L has this as standard.

I'm glad you like the ACC as mine sometimes tries to kill me.

SD card? USB stick? Deezer all the way totally wireless ftw!!

Android Auto in wireless form does an initial connect via Bluetooth but then switches to WiFi - the data transfer rate required is too high for Bluetooth.

@GWoodhouse I came from a 14-plate Superb S to the SE L FE a while back. A massive step up in gizmos and infotainment systems. Absolutely love it!

I use Apple Car play not Android Auto, but from memory earlier versions of the Mk4 Octy weren't able to use wireless Android Auto. There was a s/ware update for the car which sorted it but not sure if all h/ware versions can support it. Also, older Android versions don't support wireless connection.

For the screen brightness somewhere there is an auto setting, like MCG1975 I set mine up a good 18 months ago so can't remember exactly where in the menus it is. Best guess at the mo. is Car--> Interior --> .... Could well be wrong on that though!

SatNav brightness & night mode, I think, is in the Nav settings.

Door mirror positions is with the personalisation, either (or both) the car user or the key if you have electric memory driver seat. Mine now sets according the the user which is associated with the two different keys.

SD card --> USB - I bought a small USB-C stick on Amazon. A few quid for 64GB which is more than enough for my music library. Interestingly, it also supports video playback! Out of curiosity I tried it out once when parked up on the drive. Hopefully the system is clever enough to prevent the driver watching a movie whilst actually driving!

Hope you continue to enjoy the car. They are lovely and surprisingly economical.

Huawei P20. Doing a bit of research you need to be running Android v11 for wireless Android Auto, my phone is running v9 so looks like I need a new phone to go with my new car!

My son's iPhone 12 worked flawlessly, much better interface too.

Discovered you can quickly access the screen brightness by swiping down on the homescreen to access shortcuts, this appears to be a separate setting in conflict with setting the brightness via Settings - Screen - Brightness!

I've set the mirror positions along with the seat positions using the memory buttons on the seat. I've not assigned users to keys yet, is this done through Personalisation and Skoda Connect?

USB-C stick arrived today, music transferred and working well. Still think the SD card in the glovebox is a better solution.

Still can't get the satnav into night mode, nothing in the settings.

It’s through personalisation. Can’t remember how, but its buried somewhere in the manual.

Screen brightness does go lower when car knows its darker outside. In the middle screen, you can use the pull down menu to set your brightness. I've got it on half.

On Satnav you need to change your display mode to "automatic" its on day mode by default. Then its automatic by light setting.

Wing mirrors - Do you always enter the car with one key? The settings are tied to keys. I've had no issues with them.

Who uses SD cards or USB-sticks anymore ;)

Found it! It's not under Settings (why would it be?!), you have to click on the three dots when viewing the Map and it comes up. Found the answer on a VW forum.

Think the mirrors issue is fixed, at least for my key, need to try it with the wife's now.

Thanks all for your help, 4 days of ownership and I think I've finally got it setup how I want!
