Power Steering Level

Featured Replies

I need some help.

I recently injured my right shoulder and as a consequence, steering the car, even on “normal” is proving challenging from a pain perspective. Does anyone know if it’s possible to increase the assistance level via VCDS/OBD11 etc.? I’m presuming there isn’t, but thought it was worth asking!

Pretty sure it's a dataset/parameterisation job to change the steering assist curve these days.

It's not something VCDS or OBDeleven can do. You'll need something like ODIS or VCP :)

Cheers Langers2k, so hopefully it can be done. If so, I wonder if it would be possible to add it as a third option on the steering menu, so normal, sport and light!?

Does comfort mode make it any easier for you to steer?

I know ObdEleven allows you to set rack constantly in sport, but can’t remember if it can be adjusted the other way to constantly in comfort.

It was possible to set the 'Disability setting' on cars and lighter steering and more brake assist and was often done for Motability Customers, maybe for those using a steering ball or hand controls etc.

Is that no longer the case.

Many cars at the end of a Motability Lease go to BCA and then into the motor trade without being put back to the Factory Setting because the last Service and the MOT can be up to 2 months before the cars hand back.

Some might have reduced assist and that can be how you get a used car.

Pretty sure that stopped being possible on some models starting around 2010. For instance, the early MK2 Octavia could be done by changing an adaption channel but the late ones need a new dataset uploading.

Depending on the Steering Aid Generation/Software Version this Channel may or may not be active. Generation 1 and early Generation 2 still allowed switching between up to 16 different predefined Characteristic Curves, while later/updated Generation 2 and 3 do not and the Adaptation Channel is being inactive/unavailable.

The Control Module Identification lists the currently selected Characteristic Curve. The first Example shows an early Generation 2 with a currently active Curve #9 indicated by Kl. 9 in the Component Field, while the second Example shows a Generation 3 which cannot be altered. As a rule of thumb, if the Number of current Setting is larger as 20 this Setting/Channels cannot be altered directly.

Saying that, I just came access the following which suggests there is one setting that might make is slightly more assisted, try looking at this: https://www.vwvortex.com/threads/diy-permanently-increase-steering-weight-via-vcds.8410537/

No idea how noticeable it'll be when set to comfort :)

Unfortunately not, I needs to be like my sons old Grande Punto on “City” setting which made the steering non-existent.

I don't think you'd be able to a 'light' setting to the menu

Thanks; didn’t think it would be possible…..

Afraid that Skodas don't have a FIAT style "girlie button" for the steering.

Perhaps you just need to use a steering wheel knob that disabled people use as adaptions?

Use right hand to grip only as and when you need to change gear's?

Left handed steering might feel a little off to begin with if not your dominant hand, but should be workable.
