Timing belt

Featured Replies

HI i had to call skoda roadside assist the other day as my 19 plate superb was overheating,   the guy said it needed a new water pump and took the car to the local dealership.  i called today and asked if  the timing belt will be changed, and they said  that they are still wating for authorisation   to change the pump under warranty and when that get it they will call me and ask if i want the belt changed and all i will have to pay for is the kit and not the labour as that will be cover by the warranty  for changing the pump.

i was under the impressing that if changing the pump you have to change the belt  as they cant be retentioned,  is this correct,  should they replace it as part of the course?

thank

@staituk  Handy if you said what engine your car has, is it a TDI rather than a TSI?

Not sure, but it's certainly good practice to change the belt if you need to detension it.

So there are procedures in place to reuse the timing belt as noted in the vehicle repair manual - Dealers will do it. Most independents will not even think of reusing a belt.

Personally, for peace of mind and price, I would not be reusing it and as they are not charging you labor, id just go for it. The kit itself is hopefully under £300 if theyre changing pulleys and tensioners as well. (Yes sometimes tensioners and pulleys are not changed!!! crazy)

Me personally, I wouldnt be reusing the belt and would be replacing.

Thats reasonable as long as all pulleys and tensioner is also being replaced.

This is exactly what has just happened to me.  I've got a similar thread in this forum called 'Breakdown in France'. My water pump was was diagnosed, claimed and repaired in 2 days.  I had the timing belt replaced at the same time at an additional cost of £332, due to reduced labour, instead of the standard price of £600.

Hope you get it sorted soon.
