Sportline Front Shockers

Featured Replies

Anyone else having problems with the front shockers. Following a recent oil change and inspection service on my 2.0 TDI 4X4 DSG (at 26k at 2.5 year old) it was reported that both shockers were leaking and probably an MoT failure at 3 years. Not covered  by manufacturers warranty surprisingly!

?

Was it the Service desk person or the Service Manager that told you and said the warranty would not cover them,

or the Master Tech and had they checked them.

Did anyone speak with the Warranty Manager for that branch or area and involve the master tech in that discussion?

Actually leaking is an issue.

But then if leaking they can say not faulty and just how you use the 4x4 SUV.  Not a manufacturing fault.

Best have a Mechanic have a look at the dampers for you and comment.

If just misting then that can carry on for years and not be an issue or a MOT fail.

Thanks Roottoot. This inspection was carried out by an independent specialist garage and they have agreed to carry out a pre MoT inspection a month before MoT to assess the extent of the leak and if a possible failure. At the previous oil and inspection service at 15k carried out at the main dealer they failed to provide a copy of the video inspection despite being included in the invoiced (and hence contracted) work and my email request. Their customer service was so poor I would have scored them negative stars if that was possible. I attempted to book at the same dealer for this service but their attitude and failure to match the service cost quoted on Skoda site forced me to go to the independent specialist.
I have already contacted Skoda UK who have confirmed that the shockers will not be replaced under warranty and “hid” behind the dealer network.

Have I got a rogue dealer and a rogue Karoq? So far my experience of Skoda has been very disappointing which is a shame as I really like my vehicle purchased following extensive reviews and recommendations in motoring press, namely WhatCar magazine.
My friend who owns a similar aged Volvo XC40 has had a number of issues already resolved free of charge by the Volvo main dealer. I prefer the interior of my Sportline but am considering other manufacturers for my next purchase.

Simply, are they leaking, were they poorly manufactured.  If you think  so have an Approved VW group repairer inspect them. Make a warranty claim or not, do not wait till the car has been on the road 35 months.   A tech might support the claim or might not.  Dampers do fail.  Some are replaced under warranty.   Misting is common.   Wipe / clean them and see if leaking or they get misted.

Thanks for the advice. I will follow up with an approved repairer. I have read the warranty exclusions and shock absorbers are not covered by the warranty. I am therefore dependent on  Skoda accepting that there was a manufacturing fault or a goodwill gesture. Wish me luck!!!

Wish you luck but it'd be the first I've heard of anyone receiving 'goodwill' after they had a service carried outside the dealer network. I suspect the answer will something along the lines of - "If there was a manufacturing fault then our approved service agent would have noted this at the 1st service ( 15k ? ). Defo no harm in trying tho, I'd be doing the same.

Regarding your earlier post, Skoda UK or any importer for that matter, do not 'hide' behind their dealer network as their job is only to advice and liase - basically try and keep the customer happy. They have to rely on their dealer network physically examining so have no option but to refer you back to the dealer. They should have a complaints procedure to follow if you wish to complain about one of their dealers tho. From our point of view, Skoda UK is just a person behind a desk who, to be fair to them, will also work for VW UK, Audi UK, SEAT UK etc.

It's a bit off your dealer provided poor customer service and then charge prices higher than advertised. It's up to the individual dealer if they want to reduce prices to compete with local businesses, but I've never heard of one charging more than the advertised price. What were you having done and what price did they quote you?

As for rougue dealers, every manufacturer is the same. You mention Volvo. One of the most frustrating experience's I had was from a Volvo dealer in Glasgow who seemed to see problems at every corner, the Perth dealership sorted out the issue without blinking an eye. Guess which dealer received all my future business when I owned Volvos. Vote with your feet is my advice.

The car is 2.5 years old.  It only needs a service at 24 months / 20,000 miles, or if on fixed at 12 months / 9,600 miles & the next could be at 36,000 months so the car has been serviced at a Skoda Main Dealers.

It was done @ 15,000 miles.  So that is Serviced to the Manufacturers Recommendations, Guidelines and even Schedule.

Additional inspections or maintenance or oil changes does not mean any loss of 'Main Dealer Servicing' record.

PS.

Plenty Skoda Dealerships in the UK do not charge to Skoda Fixed Price And Maintenance dealers for cars from 3-10 years old.

They have to be a Participating Dealer.

This is not a 3-10 year old car and the price charged for Servicing can be anything in different parts of the UK and where the customer is told there is special oil and this has increased in price.

That is as recently has been the case.

Just a one off with @phh683& the £229.00. Or maybe not as they will have customers in 5 days a week.

@YorkieDave

Your Haldex is due a Service @ 3 years / 30,000 miles or even sooner.

Best be sure that is is not just done as an oil change and no clean out done.

The Skoda Fixed Price Servicing and Maintenance price might just just be an Oil change and to have it done as you would want and should be might cost more.

40,000 mile DSG Services apply to those needing that schedule, not those on 80,000 miles or no servicing and the 4 years is not the schedule and never has been.

Thanks roottoot. I will keep an eye on the service intervals for Haldex and DSG. Independent specialist garage said DSG service interval had been recently extended to 80k by VAG. I think your post says stick to 40k ?

Just encountered a new “problem”. Changed the key fob battery last night and wife tried to open the car this lunchtime and key wouldn’t work! Did a bit of trawling on internet but not found the solution. Luckily the spare key appears to work as normal so she has headed off to pick up grandkids. Before she left I tried holding the non functioning key against the starter button and was able to start car! Message came up on dashboard “key fob not detected” before engine fired. Can the fob be reprogrammed at home?

If your Karoq has a DQ381 DSG then yes 80,000 miles.    So if that suits you.

My post does not say stick to 40,000 miles if you have a DQ381.  Just that there are DSG that do not need doing at 40,000 miles, or ones that do not need doing.

There was never a 4 year service Schedule. only by miles.

I read that as the work having been carried out by a non-franchised dealer.

Such an odd thing to say. Is any disputing the car wasn't serviced to the manufacturer recommendations, guidlines and even scheule?

The OP had work carried outside main dealer network. As I said, good luck to anyone looking for  'goodwill'  when, in the eyes of Skoda, the owner has not shown 100% loyalty to the Skoda network.  ( As many of us owners will testify, it can be difficult enough acheiving 'goodwill' when we have shown 100% commitment to the franchised dealer network ).

As for prices - they can charge whatever they want, but it's certainly never been my experience and certainly not in a main dealers interest to charge more than other businesses for the same work. If a dealer isn't interested in wanting my business, like the OP, I'd vote with my feet too.

@kodiaqsportlinereally your experiences of the dealers you frequent are neither here or there as they appear to always be spot on and as quoted or advertised and you are a true committed customer and fan boy who is at the service desk and the waiting area seeing so many transactions between service staff and customers.

You have posted of various dealership experiences around Scotland and that is nice to know how well you get on.

The 100% commitment can still be shown to the Dealership network when the car is serviced to the Recommendations , guidelines or even schedule which would be at 3 years , 30,000 miles possibly.

An additional / interim service / oil change with the correct fluids / parts at a VAT registered establishment is not an issue.

The Haldex Service is due @ 3 years / 30,000 miles to have the car serviced to the manufacturers recommendations.

Gestures is just a piece of nonsense that the Dealership come away with.   The gestures used to be generous or appear so when actually valid Warranty Claims.

Owners accepting 60% contribution and such nonsense as has been happening with Corrosion Warranty claims.

The reason that me and others have suggested over the years to pay something towards 'Warranty Work' when possible or them giving an offer of maybe 80% for the job that 'the price of is overinflated' compared to what a Warranty company wold be paying is you are not just covered to the end of the Manufacturers Warranty.

You get 2 years Parts & Labour cover.

Only a month ago, at an inspection service at a Skoda dealer, it was noticed that one of the shock absorbers was leaking and it was replaced with the approval of the warranty manager, so it does seem to be covered by the standard warranty

Hi boraman.  Thanks for your response. What age and mileage was your vehicle and was it a Karoq? Where is your dealer? I am aware that my dealer has previously reported leaky shockers on an Octavia, said they didn’t need to be replaced, and then failed it at Its first MoT! Obviously outside any warranty period.

Hi YorkiDave. My Karoq was 2.5 yrs old, done about 40K miles. It was inspected at a Skoda dealer, Garlands in Aldershot, where I have always have my servicing etc carried out. At the same time, under warranty, they replaced both front door locks  which were showing errors, and a rear quarterlight trim that had lifted off.

Thanks boraman. Looks as if you have a real gem of a main dealer. I will contact my dealer to follow up my problem. Thanks for your info.
