Haldex service

Featured Replies

When should the Haldex system be serviced on a  70 plate 190 diesel

2 year service or 3 year

It probably depends on how many miles it's been driven, in what kind of conditions and therefore how often the Haldex has engaged more than the ever present 10% torque to the rear wheels,

I saw some pics recently of the Haldex mesh strainer from a Karoq that was badly clogged at 20k miles.  On the basis of that, I had Haldex oil changed and the strainer cleaned in our Karoq at 20k miles by our local independent VAG specialist.

Two before and one after pic attached.  The guy who did the job said he'd seen worse.

Whatever you do, make sure that the Haldex pump is removed and the strainer is cleaned.   That service procedure is not included on any VAG dealership service schedule.

This is the pic that prompted me to have ours done at 20k.  It was posted on the Skoda Karoq Owners UK page on Facebook by a garage in Galashiels.

It’s not by the calendar, but is mileage based.

No later than 38k miles, but won’t do any harm doing it early if car is going in for something else anyway.

Don’t just get the basic fluid change, insist on the mesh sieve/strainer also being cleaned

It is by the calendar with the VW Group, VW / Audi / Skoda / SEAT and that is at 3 years or 30,000, which ever comes first.

(30,000 is my mileage, and a 15,000 mile a year car will come up in 2 years)

It has been so for years now.

(It was at 4 years / 40,000 miles until VW changed that to the more frequent service advice, guidelines, recommendations or even schedule, that was after failures,

a year or so later Skoda eventually appeared to, not that all Skoda Dealership employees seem to have caught up on that.)

Volvo has had it at 20,000 miles for years now.

The DSG Servicing is by miles not years.

Then the cars with a VAQ Diff are @ 3 years / 30,000 miles and not as some are told, not necessary. do it next time if you want.

forgive my ignorance , I'm not really mechanically minded but it says 4x4 oil change on year 3 and DSG oil change on year 4

What is the 4x4 oil change is that rear differential or transfer box and is the DSG oil change the actual automatic gearbox

Yes, 4x4 is the Haldex (front-back) box, DSG is automatic gearbox

Bear in mind those charts are based on specific mileages (which I think it says in tiny print), and these need doing if you reach certain mileages before the date shown.

Thank you for your informative answer

Apologies for warming over an old thread, however I've just been informed by local UK dealer that Haldex service advice has changed and it's now every 2 years.  That probably fits in with some of the grotty photos coming from 3 year vehicles.

They will be able to show that in writing to you if that is the Skoda / VW Recommendation, Guidelines, Specification or Schedule.

?

Are they saying they will do it properly, not just change the oil, and how much do they want?

?

Is the Brake Fluid at each 2 years and not just at 3 years and then each 2 years.

?

Are you getting trhe spark plugs changed at 40,000 miles?

Skoda might want to update their website then... that still says every 3 years / 30,000 miles.

I'm not vouching for this information you understand.  Just sharing what I was told.  I challenged the change to 2 year guideance and the dealer acknoweldged this was different and showed me a web page that did indeed say every 2 years, but I don't know who's web page that was.  Would a main dealer bare faced lie about it I wonder?

...and no, I'm sure they won't remove the pump or clean the screen.

Volvo was 2 years / 20,000 miles for years.  They are worth doing to that schedule when the car is a keeper.  It all adds up to high running costs for servicing with Main Dealers and even can be with Independents.   As long as they are doing it properly then why not go with that intervals.  But how much are we at now for a clean out and oil change £140?  Or do they want more?     PS. Cars with the front VAQ diffs are now @2 years / 20,000 miles, some places are not even telling owners the 3 years / 30,000 miles they were at. Some owners have cars with them never serviced.

I will be getting mine done when I get the DSG oil changed at the next "inspektion", at around 115000. It was done a couple of years ago, so a lot of the initial crud will be gone, but we push 4x4 hard up here, so I'll get it done early. The DSG oil was also changed early on this car (shouldn't be needed until 120000km on a '380) but it was done, so I'm leaving it a little over 60k kms, but then doing that, too. Bring everything into line for autumn changes ahead of slippery season.

My garage should be charging around €150-200 ish, and they'll change the strainer out - their recommendation. Worked beautifully on the Superb.

If you can feel the power transfer to the rear wheels in any way - change the Haldex oil. Thumps when power gets through? change the Haldex oil. The power transfer front to rear should be completely imperceptible. Mine wasn't and switching the oil out showed how rough (relatively speaking) the transfer was.

@brettikivi  You have a DQ381 DSG do you not?  Not a DQ380.

That's helpful information.  Thank you.

I didn't really think anything of it. I drive probably 4 months of the year on ice / snow, so when it thumped a couple of times after crossing other roads and the power being allowed through and then not again, I didn't really think much of it, just that that was "how it should be" but "that was not good, should get that sorted if it happens too much".

You could really feel the power being pushed around though, also on gravel (we have lots, and lots of it is 80km/h limited). With the oil changed, that completely went away. Was a joy to drift on the ice, just needed to remember to keep my foot in to prolong the slide... and then sit and wait for the power and grip to be enough to push it straight again. Same thing at any traffic light or roundabout - keep the foot in a little too long, a dab of oppo and we're good. ESP even allows it, especially in ESC sport mode.

Unfortunately Skoda UK can shorten the interval as much as they want. Until they include the removal of the pump and cleaning of the gauze filter in their workshop manual instructions, more frequent oil changes will be of little or no benefit.
