Octavia VRS 2.0 245 Steaming Engine

Featured Replies

Hi - has anyone else with 2.0 Petrol VRS noticed a fair amount of steam from engine bay area escaping via front frill only when raining...I have a video that I wanted to upload but its greater than 10MB!

Only happens when raining, all fluid levels fine so assume its the cold water against hot metal components that causing that?

For info my "generic" engine cover is no more...

Depends on what you mean by a fair amount, and the conditions. The radiator will be closer to 90-100°C if stationary, so there would definitely be vapor coming off it if rain or any sort of water is left standing there. Other sources of quick steaming would be the turbocharger and the exhaust manifold, but those are behind the engine, not at the front grille.

My old Golf 1.8T let off steam when I hosed it from the front, that's fully normal. Not a good idea hosing the turbo or exhaust manifold directly, though.

Upload to YouTube, then link to Briskoda using our link tool (chain icon).

Yeah thats what I was thinking but did get a little concerned as never seen it on any of previous cars Ive owned.

Will try the YouTube video upload as suggested by @KenONeill

I never noticed anything excessive. And almost 2 years in my possession.

I've never seen steam like that from an Octavia or indeed a Superb.

Also, I take it you'd no issues with linking your video once you knew to do it?

My thoughts exactly but informed by dealer that its not an issue?! Also noticed steam coming off the top of the bonnet after a decent run when its wet...cant be certain if this happened post the engine cover being removed?

No issues with the car itself...close to 12k miles now and feels a lot stronger than it did a year ago

It could be the headlight washer over spray you are seeing. This occurs the first time you use the windscreen washers and then every 10th (I think) after.

I have the same model, but when i lift a bonnet, my motor is even not so warm. because the system made the job well done. There is off course price for that ... noising pump.. . After engine stopped the pump is running for additional 10 min or so. It's not ventilator. its pump. But u can put your hand on cover and feel normal temp. If i start washing car there is no steam at all ..

Assuming that's not steam under pressure escaping, how hot is the steam?

I ask that, because I'm wondering if you've had a look under the bonnet while this is happening?

You can't tell the temperature of your engine by putting your hand on the plastic cover. A combustion engine is around 90°C when up to temp and you definitely don't want to touch the block or valve cover with your bare hands, ask me how I know. The pump you hear is the auxiliary water pump which circulates coolant to smooth out temperature gradients after shutting down. It also keeps warm coolant flowing through the heater core so that you can have a nice warm cabin in the traffic lights while the engine is stopped.
