Coolant Warning - Possible sensor issue

Featured Replies

Hi All,

About 4 weeks ago I had the coolant flushed from the card and replaced ready for winter!!

I was getting the coolant warning on the dash but this stopped once it was replaced. However last week it popped up again it has got cold -3 so I think its the sensor.

I have the 1.6TDI 2010 and its just clocked 100k miles.

Is the sensor a DIY job and does anyone know the part? I should also point out once the engine has been running for 10 mins or so if I switch the car off and back on the warning dissapears.

Yes. If your car isn't cursed with screened prongs, when the engine is COLD:-

  1. Open the spherical expansion bottle and look in.
  2. You should see 2 metallic prongs descending into the coolant.
  3. Get a big (say 5mm) flat blade screwdriver and scrape it down each prong 2 or three times.

This should stop the fault recurring until it gets cold at the end of next year.

Well Iam supprised its that easy but it does look to have worked. I guess the only way to solve that problem is to change the tank!!

I believe that an updated expansion tank is available, with modified sensor probes. And without Silicat

@MRB007, did you solve this issue? Just curious as I (might) have the same myself. 🙂

@Octan, Yes I did doing this

  1. Open the spherical expansion bottle and look in.
  2. You should see 2 metallic prongs descending into the coolant.
  3. Get a big (say 5mm) flat blade screwdriver and scrape it down each prong 2 or three times.
