Warm Octavia struggling to start (mk3 2.0tdi150)

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I finally managed to get a video of this fault which has been bugging me for a while and is slowly getting worse!

The video shows what it looks / sounds like but for context:

This began about a year ago when my start / stop would occasionally not restart first time, after a while it would take two attempts then three, and then I would be prompted to put the car in park and start with the key. Recently even starting the car with the key sometimes takes several attempts as seen in the video above.

It only seems to happen when the car is warm and has been driven for a while. Commonly after I have made a journey of at least 30 miles or half an hour. The car starts fine from cold.

So far I have got around the problem by disabling start/stop when I get in but occasionally I forget and have been left stranded in the middle of the road when turning right, or just at a queue at traffic lights.

Has anyone seen this before or knows of a potential fix?

Thanks!

Jack

DSG gearbox might not be sensing the Park/Neutral/Reverse positions correctly and that will most likely cancel the engine start.

A wiring breakdown that occurs when warm (fuses can expand and cracks appear with temperature changes)

Have you got access to a fault code reader?  If yes, what codes if any have been stored?

There is a list on the forum of VCDS user's in map format that you might be able to contact if you don't have.

And of course wait a few hours and more replies will come, "seen that before, it's xyz"

Thanks Varooom, I have occasionally had the error message about the sensor but decided to ignore it after reading online advice.

I never thought to connect the two and didn't realise that it could cancel the engine start.

That is definitely something to pursue further. I dont have a fault code reader, but think it will be worth booking it in to get it sorted, as I have been putting it off for a long time now, and need to bite the bullet really!
