1.9 TDI Elegance Octavia Estate 05. Are these the correct glow plugs to replace these with?

Featured Replies

Just spent two days loving the glow plugs out of a 1.9tdi Elegance Octavia Estate: 177 thousand miles on clock.

The glow plugs I assume are originals as there is no voltage information, just the following:

The plugs read

VW-AG Beru Germany 531
Photos show old plugs. condition of tips 🙈

Are these the original?

And are these a suitable replacement?

You shouldn't have bothered, glow plugs aren't necessary on the old PD lumps until ambient temperature is <-10C.

Thanks for your opinion, but that was not the question I was asking.

In theory that is the correct part number yes.

There is a use for the glowplug (of course not needed for starting unless mad cold) for emission/running smoother.

Has a run time of four minutes, unless you give it above 2,500rpm.

Additional Information

It was fault codes for all 4 glowplugs on my PD engine that brought me back to this forum (the MK1 Octavia was so reliable I had no need to visit) I refused to accept that all 4 would have failed yet the engine started and ran correctly so was looking at wiring, relay problems etc.

More experienced minds convinced me to change them but I was sceptical, even more so when there was absolutely no difference with the new glowplugs aside from that which I wanted to resolve, - no more fault codes!!!!

So the PD engine has them but in my experience really doesn't need them for starting even in glacial conditions, for post start emissions probably but they are not my concern.

Since then I have never waited for the glowplug light to go out even on my current CR engine.

For me to believe that I would need the data that no PD engine has ever broken from a Glow Plug Tip.

Maybe the fault was not fixed. Carbon build up can fry plugs (hopefully not my issue ) - you can remove carbon deposits with a reamer

Ah the dreaded practice...

I see these in the product info. Pardon my ignorance. What is difference between 'to' and 'from?'

  • Tightening torque to [Nm]:20
  • Tightening torque from [Nm]: 15

It's not very clear there, but in workshop manual.

Tighten to 15 Nm

Max removal torque is 20 Nm

Any ideas where I find the info for maximum bore depth and width for when reaming carbon out of glow plug apertures?

The only post on Briskoda I can find is this and it's not very useful.

Sorry this is not mentioned in the workshop manuals as far as I recall, just the fitting torque only.

Apart from taking the existing measurements on the old/new glow plugs I am not sure.
