Suspension wear loose feeling

Featured Replies

Hi

My Superb mk3 has developed a bit of looseness / wandering when on the motorway.  I have had this on cars before where it is things like front control arm ball joint or rear axle control arm etc. that required replacing. I have checked for any obvious play but can’t find any.

Are there any particular components known to wear out first on these cars?

Sorry no idea.  But are all the tyres good and the pressures correct for the load carried and the weather/ temperature now?

Hi

Tyres correct pressure and fine.

The symptoms are same as I have had on previous cars with one or more suspension parts wearing but not bad enough to make an obvious clunk.

A previous car I had the front control arm ball joints were considered consumables and gave sloppy steering when worn every 30k miles or so.

? What car was that?  Thankfully these days for those that might do 20,000 miles a year or more that is not common.

Hi toot,

Was a Renaultsport model.

@MrRich

Do you have DCC in your Mk3?

Leakage on front shock aborbers is known issue.

May be worth to have a quick look at them…

Hi,

No DCC, standard suspension and no leaks from dampers having inspected them.

I have purchased Lemforder front control arm lower ball joints, and these look relatively straight forward to install though the official manual makes reference to removing the drive shaft.  Is this necessary or can they be replaced without separating drive shaft from hub?

Hi again,

I have done some online research and there is no mention that I can find of having to remove the drive shaft on the Golf Mk7 which is also an MQB platform car like the Superb.

Does anyone know for definite if it must be removed or is it only removed to enable working space for the VAG press to separate the ball joint out the hub?
