Master Cylinder Cap

Featured Replies

This sounds simple but whist replacing the rear brake calipers as one has seized, I cannot check the brake fluid level. I have spent the morning trying to release the cap. Any hints? On the twist either way to release theory I've only managed to turn a little clockwise.

Is it normal clockwise do up, anticlockwise undo and how do you get a good grip under the bulkhead what tool do you use?

If you aren't competent to unscrew the brake fluid reservoir cap I seriously doubt you should be working on safety critical aspects of your vehicle, the safety of other innocent road users are at stake.

I appreciate space is limited, remember "lefty loosey, righty tighty".

You can check the level. The reservoir is transparent, there is no need to remove the cap to check the level.

It sounds like this is the first time anyone has tried removing the tight cap, you will get more grip wearing a rubber glove.

I am competent to undo the lid on a food jar but it can still often defeat me!

Thank you J.R. for your comments

Thank you MicMac for at least replying.

Just to explain I have been stripping, rebuilding engines, rewiring and fixing Cars and motorcycles for over 50 years .There are sometimes those little tips on other forums which suggest a tip to help like left hand thread or release pressure by... I prefer thinking about issues rather than the getting a bigger hammer approach.

If your approach is not helpful please do not reply to my posts

@Eliska

We can only comment on what is written, we don't know your background and there are many here who despite good intentions don't even know which end of a screwdriver to hold so don't be overly offended.

In future say you're experienced etc. in a post until you are known... and we will have a chuckle at your misfortune not being ours!

All the best for 2023

Application of heat to the cap and rubber gloves as previously mentioned may help, using the fingertips of two fingers on both hands to rotate.

One of those boa strap wrenches normally used on oil filters might help if you can't get a hand fully round the cap.

Thanks for your help, rear brakes fully assembled. It just took a little more heat than I was comfortable with to release the master cylinder cap next to a wiring loom.
