Gurgling sounds from the tailpipe of our Skoda Octavia

Featured Replies

Hi there!

First time poster. We absolutely love our Skoda Octavia from 2014 and haven’t had any issues with it since we bought it last year.

We have just experienced an issue though that concerns us a bit. Anybody knows what causes the tailpipe to sound like there is water in it? (Video attached)

It has been doing it for over a week now. Especially after heavy rainfall. And it continues doing it, even after a 10 minute drive.

The car is a Skoda Octavia 1.4 Tsi 140 hp, hatchback from 2014.

Cheers

Morten

Bon soir, Monsieur, welcome to the forum. This is most likely just heavy condensation in the back-box, although it could also be a loose baffle - although that usually sounds like a rattle.  Does the sound disappear after a longer run?

Thank you for the quick reply, Warrior193!

Fingers crossed that it is just heavy condensation.

We haven’t been driving for more than 10-15 a time the last week, so can’t say yet unfortunately.

it did stop gurgling for 3-4 dags ago when it had been dry weather for a couple of days. It started again today.

 10-15 minutes*

Could very well be condensation then - surface water spraying up from roadway and cooling the exhaust system could make it act like a condenser. Is your engine petrol or diesel?

That would be great!

It is running on petrol 🙂

Mine is the same, have not been able to find any reason for it yet.

Our 1.4tsi experiences the same gurgling noises from water build up when subjected to successive short journeys in cold or cold and wet weather.

A longer journey with the occasional rev in the lower gears when warmed up will clear it,

I have seen litres of water pour from some (non Skoda) cars exhausts when accelerating away from traffic lights in cool conditions soon after a cold start.

Thank you so much for your inputs!

We are very relieved it is not a problem and that we have saved the expenses on getting a mechanic to look at it.

Take a longer run out somewhere nice for the day and check it then. A little treat for the wagon too.
