Sticking exterior door handle

Featured Replies

The exterior door handle on the passenger side of the car is starting to feel a bit sticky. The car is about 14 months old. Frankly, it doesn’t get used a huge amount, and the drivers door, obviously three times as much as the passengers door. Any ideas how to stop it sticking? It’s a very small amount of sticking right now, just want to do something about it before it gets any worse.

Before I shove some WD-40 in there, has anybody had this problem before, or have any thoughts on the best way to deal with it? I could go as far as taking it to the dealer, but it would be a pain having to do the 30 mile round-trip for them to shoot a jet of WD-40 at it, and give me the keys back…

never had the problem you describe but if you have the correct tool ( or somthing like it ), it's dead easy to remove the handle.

VW door handle removal

I used that video as a guide to remove mine. Most VW group cars are similar in design.

Suppose you could remove it and check there's nothing obvious causing friction. Lightly greasing the black plastic runner parts of the handle won't do any harm either.

Good luck.

Edit - just remembered, your car may have KESSY. If it does then removal is exactly the same, just it will have a wire harness with a connecting block that you need to release.

I had the same on my previous Kodiaq, and there have seen reports of similar on other models , and always the passenger door handle.

Spraying the mechanism exposed when the handle is pulled out with with white lithium grease solved the problem for me.

I wouldn’t advise using standard WD-40 as this would just wash away any of

the original lubricant , and doesn’t provide any useful lubricant properties.

Instead of WD-40 Multi-Use get a can of GT85 does all that the WD-40 does but better and longer lasting and smells nice, finishes drier and less sticky than grease. - https://gt85.co.uk/
