Octavia 3, 1.6 TDI 85kW, wierd noise after engine shutdown

Featured Replies

Hey everyone,

week back I bought a "new" car - Octavia 3 Style, 1.6 TDI 85kW, 5-speed manual, front wheel drive, 158k kilometers. I had it checked by a mechanic and its in good shape.

However, today I found out that there is a strange noise after engine shutdown ( it was probably always there, I just discovered it ).

It doesnt sound that concerning and I dont feel any difference in driving / power whatsoever.

Its coming from left front part of the vehicle. Ive recorded this sound :

Turn up the volume, after engine shutdown you can hear 4 "clicks" and some "electrical whine". Anyone has the same problem, or does anyone know whats the problem here?
Should I be concerned, or is it normal, maybe some kind of mechanism I dont know about?

Thanks a lot

Diesel  dpf regen cycle. Occurs when the dpf regen cycle has not completed when driving and continues for a while after stopping. Mine does the same.

That noise is not the fans running which would be the case of an uncompleted DPF recycle so I believe your conclusion is incorrect.

Several solenoid valves and vacuum actuators release on engine shutdown which can make some weird noises, my MK2 Octavia sounded like a cow expelling its terminal breath!

I dont personally think that is unfinished DPF cycle.

However, as @J.R. mentioned, it sounds more likely its some kind of a valve. Is it ok though? Do I need to visit someone to get this looked at?

Apart from this wierd sound, everything works perfectly.

I get the whine for a second or so, but not the clicks.

Clicks and hums can be many things after shutdown including throttle valves, solenoids, relays and if you’re getting a hum it could be the electronic water pumps carrying on their cycle for a bit to help cool the engine down.

i had weird noises from my Octavia on switch off, it was a faulty coolant pump b, an electrical water pump that pushes coolant around the engine when its switched off.

Cheap ish to fix, around £130 from a VW indie, showed up on scanner.

@adg1 on scanner nothing is showing up, neither before or after the ride. Im not a car expert, but from what I know, water pump is on the "belt" ( I dont know how to say it in english, its the component that runs everything - like camshafts, A/C etc. ) and the belt, in this engine, is on the left when standing in front of the car. Therefore, if the sound comes from the front right I dont think its the problem here.

However, based on answers, I will basicly ignore it, since it doesnt show up on scanner, doesnt cause any problems and everything seems to be working fine.
