iPhone 11 won't charge or connect to Apple CarPlay via USB A port on 2019 Kodiaq

Featured Replies

Haven't tried to use CarPlay for a while, or tried charging my iPhone via the single USB (A) port. This all used to work with my old iPhone 8.

Now, when I plug my iPhone 11 into the newly cleaned USB port, using a brand new, wokrking Apple branded lightning to USB lead (£19 !!!), the phone intially starts to charge but then flicks in and out of charging rapidly for about 30 seconds before refusing to charge at all. This same pattern happens every time I plug it in. I've tried other iPhone 11s, same result. The same USB port will charge an old Samsung Galaxy Tab,

Having checked compatibility, I believe that the version of Columbus I have in my car (manufactured from 7/30/218) is only compatible with iPhones up to version 'X'. But I'm not convinced that the lack of compatibility would prevent charging from working?

Anyway, I guess the solution might be to update my Columbus infotainment to some later version that includes compatibility with iPhone 11?

I don't have access to a computer that can write to an SD card so that option is out.

I understand from https://availability.skoda-auto.com/ that whilst I can update maps online (by connecting Columbus to a wifi hotspot), online updates of the Infotainment system are only avaible in models built after 7/2020.

So, question is, how do I fix this issue and get charging and CarPlay functionality working for my iPhone 11? (obviously I can use a USB adapter in the 12v output, but that doesn't allow me to connect to the Infotainment)

Or do I need to swap out a potentially fault USB port?

Thanks!

You might want to find out what firmware is loaded into the head unit, and it might be updated by USB not SD Card slot.

See if you can hold down the Menu or Setup button for about 10 seconds to find the software version installed.

Are you saying it worked happily with your old iPhone, you have changed to different iPhone, and now doesn't work.

Suggests you might have wrong software on new phone, rather than car has suddenly gained a fault.

I think this is what is needed? I now see that I can update via USB too.

Sorry, should have said, CarPlay worked with my phone when I connected to a hire car recently (2022 Hyundai Tuscon)

Is available, not on PC to verify that the software train is supported, but can look if you wish.

What format is the USB stick...? Needs to be FAT32 or exFAT, if memory serves me correctly.

Having said that... does the car even recognise that you've put the USB stick in? If not, then given the original problem, I'd suggest the port could be faulty.

As mentioned, make sure it's with an MBR partition with FAT32 format or exFAT, also make sure you extract to the root of the USB, so that it has only a single file (metainfo2.txt) and the 17 folders seen.

It cannot be D:\MHI2_ER_SKG13_P4526_1440, then the files and folders inside.

Are you using the SD card slots in the glove box or USB-A in the centre console? I have to us the glove box one to update maps, is the SD card slot used for system updates also?

My car only has one USB-A, in the centre console, this is the one that is troublesome and won't read USB stick when I plug it in (greyed out when I try to select update media).

I have 2 SD card slots in the gloveboc but no means to write to an SD card to use them!

Going to try burning the files to DVD, now that I've borrowed a laptop with a DVD writer.

This is dirt cheap, I have one and it's bloody fast!

Then you just need to get an SD Card, also not mega bucks.

Thanks @varooom. DVD didn't work either! The 'select update media' screen just won't let me select any input source - USB / SD card / CD. Even though when I insert the DVD I get a pop up message saying 'CD/DVD: Software update data is available'

I'll get one of those SD card devices and try that, other than that I'm stumped, don't particularly want to pay a Skoda dealer to fix this, and don't really have any faith in them anyway.

It will be cheaper than dealers by a Country Mile, file = free.

£5 for a great USB SD reader

£x for an SD Card (may as well get a nice size to bung a few MP3/FLAC files onto)

Yeah I used the USB A port first time I tried as this is how my Land Rover's were updated. Then after reading the map update installation guide... used the SD card slot. Assume system updates would use same method as maps.

Ok so I managed to get the SW update done via an SD card - many thanks to @varooom for this.

Unfortunately it didn't solve the problem - I still can't connect to carplay or charge my iPhone 11 via USB.

I plugged in an old iphone to see what that did, this shows as charging but actually drains while the charging flash is showing, and won't connect to carplay either.

Next stop might be a replacement USB port, but TBH I'm still not convinced that my version of Columbus Infotainment, even with the applied SW update will ever support the more recent iphones as per https://compatibilitylist.skoda-auto.com/

My previous Kodiaq was a 2018 with MIB2 Columbus - same as yours. In the time I had it, I think I would have had an iPhone X, 11 and 12 (damn the iPhone Upgrade Programme sucking my wallet dry!), and all of them worked with the car, charged fine and CarPlay worked too.

Quick question @RichTea (apologies if I missed the info), but have you tried deleting the car from the iPhone? i.e. Settings - General - CarPlay? I don't think Apple have changed the CarPlay API in a way that would stop it working on older cars. My wife has a 19 plate Fabia Colour Edition, and both our phones work fine on that (old iPhone 7 or 8 and my 14 Pro Max), bot running the latest iOS for each model.

Is the one that did work still connecting?  I only ask as I know we've had an issue with our USB socket and it needs replacing.

Any update on this??! I’ve just bought a 2018 Octavia. Amundsen system but after an initial few moments of car play working, the USB now just flickers charging and then stops. (Tried 2 iPhone 11’s same issue). Multiple cables including a new genuine apple.

USB Port says it’s charging an iPad, with charging logo constantly there but the battery % does not increase. I’m lost, is it worth shelling out a fortune on a new USB port or is there a simpler fix!

Hard to imagine it's anything other than a dodgy USB port if there's intermitted power and car play connectivity.

Would have thought a dodgy connection lead more likely. Or the lead is incompatible with the socket.

OP - what happens with any other USB device you connect to the socket ( using a different cable ).
