Annoying squeak

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I’ve got an annoying squeak coming from the engine bay that I’m struggling to diagnose; any help gratefully received!

So far:

Very slight noise, assumed to be aux belt, so belt replaced at service last Autumn.

Continued for ~ 2 weeks after service then stopped completely.

Squeak returned but worse last week, changed the aux belt, no better.

Changed the tensioner (manual) as appeared worn, still no better - if anything getting worse.

Seems to be worse when engine under load eg. accelerating from low revs (like from 30mph in 4th).

Alternator and air-con pulleys seem ok and load from electrics or air-con makes no difference.

any thoughts before I relent and take it to the garage?

Thanks

aux belt

Remove aux belt and see if the noise is still there would be my first move.

Thanks.

Is it ok to drive the car without the belt on? It’s impossible to make the noise when the car is stationary…..

Belt slipping due to damp in the air?

Just start the engine but not drive it, but.......

This would suggest the noise is rotational, eg from the transmission, gearbox, wheel bearings, brakes?

So maybe this is not it.

Does temperature affect it, or distance travelled, or when you turn the steering wheel, or if the brakes are applied?

Any other clues?

SOLVED!

Turns out is was a heat-shield where the gear change cables go to the gearbox. Fixed with a big washer and a new clip.

Definitely sounded rubbery though and it was weird how it seemed related to load from the crank.

thanks for your help all.

Bent after going through a puddle?

Engine moves more when under load, enough to touch.
