Cruise control light

Featured Replies

Hi, with my previous question I got answer very quickly, so I will try my luck again.

Octavia MK2 2006, cruise control works just fine, but green light in dashboard is not turning on. What do you think, is it just bulb or there might be something else? (Of course would like everything to work, but removing dash just to change a bulb, might not be worth it).

Did this green light work before now, and now doesn't?

It will be a surface-mount LED soldered to a circuit board, not a bulb, if it exists.

@Breezy_Petenever worked for me. But I have this car just for a week, so trying to sort out all small things.

Quite likely not something that this model is built with then.

Other owners can confirm or not.

@Breezy_PeteI don't think so, in manual there is mentioned a light, if I look in the dashboard with flashlight I can see silhouette. In VW Touran around same year there is a green cruise light.

You'll have to wait for owners of 2006 mk2 Octy to say if their car such an indication.

Maybe CC was retrofitted?

All that proves is that the silhouette was printed onto the panel; it does not prove that there is a luminaire behind the silhouette.

Mine 100% definitely did not.

2006 Octavia, factory fitted cruise control.

WTF would you need a light to tell you that your car is maintaining a set speed without you using the accelerator?

Found this on net. This one has green light and it's from 2005

Do you mean the green symbol beneath the km/h text?

I doubt that a vehicle idling at standstill, in park with the drivers door open, seatbelt not worn and judging by the temperature guage which has not yet even moved a wheel would have the cruise control operational.

@J.R. Yes I mean green symbol.

Maybe my explanations are not good enough.

Green symbol shows that cruise control is activated at any speed, even with car standing still, have checked it on VW Touran, (not the same car, but dashboard is very similar).

Post a photo of the build sticker from the boot floor (or decode all the PR codes yourself). It may show whether or not the car had CC from the factory.

If it did, there's more chance an LED is fitted, if it didn't - less chance.

PR code 6Y0 means without cruise control warning system, 6Y1 means with.

You may not have either on the sticker though, as that only contains a small proportion of the build codes. May need to get full 'car data'.

@Breezy_Pete this was helpful, thank you a lot!

I even have a service book with a build sticker and all codes.

6Y0 - Without cruise control.

@J.R. without cruise control warning system 😉

I don't see a code for with/without cruise control in your photo. You may need to get the full car data to look for a code like 8T0 (without cruise control system} or 8T1 etc.

Only if you are interested to know if the car was built with CC, or it was retro-fitted later.

I became interested in this after retro-fitting my 9N Polo, then my partner's Mk1 Fabia with CC last year, both had PR codes 6Y0 and 8T0, naturally. When I investigated (on the Polo) I found no LED in the relevant position of the cluster circuit board (but the symbol cutout was visible in the panel), but also there were other components associated with the LED missing.  I decided that even if I could correctly identify all the missing parts and fit them, the cluster software might not have the relevant code to illuminate the LED appropriately anyway, so I stopped pursuing it.

The only time I find it non-obvious that cruise is active, is when it is set, then you speed up for a while ('manually' with accelerator pedal) and maintain a higher speed, then come off the accelerator but don't brake (say when approaching a roundabout). As the speed dips below the cruise setpoint, it takes over again.

I wasn't aware that cruise control might do this, never having previously driven a car with CC.

That's exactly the point I made upthread...

@Breezy_Pete

Bought a full car spec list, I have 8T2 - electronic cruise control system (CCS).

My late 2004 Elegance has Cruise Control but definately NO light to tell you it's active.

8T0 or 6YO Pete? You said 6Y0 earlier which I saw amongst the codes in the photograph.

Editted, I understand now, code 6Y0 means without CC warning system, I had no registered the warning even after the OP had corrected me.

I do now recall one circumstance where having cruise control on did catch me unawares

Driving through a village with traffic lights that turn red if you exceed the 50kph (always set to less though, think yourselves lucky you dont have them yet in the UK!) I would engage the cruise control at just beneath the limit, once back on the 80kph limit at the end of the village I would accelerate and forget the CC was on, approaching a junction I would release the throttle and use engine braking and the car would surge forward a little bit as the speed dropped to 50kph.

I wonder if it's a requirement in some markets for there to be a warning light and not others?

It's not as if its a paid optional feature, it does seem odd to make 2 different instrument binnacles one with the LED depopulated which i think is the term.

6Y0/6Y1 was discussion about the warning light.

8T0/8Tn (where n is a non-zero numeral) was a broadening of the discussion to include whether the OP's car had CC factory fitted, or retrofitted.

I think it's very likely that some countries require such a warning light to make the driver explicitly aware that non-human control is active.
