BURNING SMELL

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, I bought my first MK3 TSI vrs in December and I noticed a burning smell on hard acceleration a few days in,  it’s a mixture of oil/ hot gasses however I’ve checked all signs of oil leak under car engine bay exhaust etc and oil and coolant consumption is fine? When I drive normally it doesn’t smell at all any ideas?

Hi, welcome,

You'd probably be better posting in the relevant model section, could ask to transfer this thread to that section but you've not put what model you have and engine.  Just looked you up and see it's an Octavia so I'll 'Report' the post and ask if it can be moved, to save duplicate threads, to Skoda Octavia Mk III (2013 - 2020). - https://www.briskoda.net/forums/forum/235-skoda-octavia-mk-iii-2013-2020/

You could add Octavia to your name plate too to save confusion if you post in other sections later.

Good luck.

ETA: wow that was a quick transfer, well done Moderator.

apologies for the confusion and thanks for your help 👍🏻

Do you know your engine code?

It's printed on your V5 if not.

I believe it’s CHHB

I was checking if you had a GPF filter for particles, which is DKZA, DKTB which could explain your burning smell.

?

Where Skoda fitting GPF's in 2015 to 2.0TSI's?

That was still Euro 5 emission engines going to Euro 6 and a good while pre WLTP.

I thought the first GPF's were fitted to 1.0TSI's and well after this.

I was looking up the 2.0 ltr engines and GPF, didn't know when they got fitted to the cars, but upon research it was 01.2017 they began to be used.

I believe the GPF was fitted later in around 2017, would a res delete or any other exhaust work cause the smell?

I wish I could say for sure, but not a full time mechanic.  I was aware of GPF being a possible cause, but was not sure when they got fitted to the 2.0l until I looked up dates just now.

Maybe a small oil leak is coming out and hitting a hot part and a small amount might burn off quickly, but produce your smell.

Do you smell this in your cabin whilst driving?

Possibly, I have had the car in Skoda and they couldn’t find any leaks and they had it up on the ramp and did a health check which came back all ok,

the smell comes when I’ve put my

foot down and it comes into the cabin but it’s a lot stronger when the windows are down

Were you able to figure out what was the cause? I got a used VRS and has the same exact issue. A burning smells comes into the cabin under hard acceleration, only when the AC is on.

If you are smelling a hot burning smell / possible exhaust, then it will probably be a leak on the exhaust manifold or from the turbo that is only showing when engine is at full chat. That says to me it is a failing gasket.

Clutch?

The smell can be only felt inside. If you stop the car immediately and open the bonnet, there is no smell at all. Shouldn't the smell be noticeable outside if it was related to clutch or turbo or exhaust?

Some background: When I initially noticed the smell, the car was already making a worn bearing type noise from the AC blower. I replaced the blower and I couldn't notice the smell on a few subsequent hard accelerations. As the smell was noticeable only when the AC is on, I thought the issue was blower related and it was solved. But then it came back after a month. Then I took it to a shop nearby, they disconnected the blower and connected it back up, and....the smell was gone. Now I don't notice it anymore, it's been a week. I don't know whether it'll be back.
