Cracking noise when steering

Featured Replies

Hello new to the forum and Skodas. Had a ford for years engine gave up so felt like a change.

Bought a 2007 Octavia vrs TDI bmn engine I believe about a week ago

Drives and shifts very well

Any way has a few faults Which I realised when I was buying it but got it anyway.

A new fault tho last 2 days Is a loud cracking noise when turning the wheel notice it more sat still wasn't so bad to start with just thought it was plastic around steering wheel.

To start with as it wasn't that loud

Today I know it's defo something worse coming from under the car

Any one had this problem and what was it?

Thanks

Does it occur with the wheel turned both ways or just to one side?

The usual suspect for such would be a CV joint.

Just a thought, do you have steering wheel controls as when the clock spring goes it makes a crackling noise but that's from the steering wheel itself as the spring is located inside the steering column

Clock spring. I've had about 5 go on various cars

Happens both ways through the full range of steering

can't upload a long enough video to show it because file size is too big

Have you noticed any issues with steering controls not working, like being able to make calls or turn up the stereo

Yes, the clock spring when knackered will make a clicking noise on both locks. If you put a search in for it on here you may find a similar thread. They're quite common. What mileage has yours done?

Sounds like from under the car though would the clock spring show up as a fault on code reader? Had that go on my Mondeo

Does your horn work? Also check to make sure there's nothing got stuck in the plastic around the steering column

Cars done 140 000

Depends on the age I think. I know the later VAG models do, but mainly had them go on cars from 2013 onwards, one car had three and another had two but were high mileage vehicles. What mileage is on yours?

Horn works il take the plastics off and see if can see anything

Sounds more from underneath the car tho

Air bag will be on the steering wheel and on the later model is the first indication of a bust clock spring. Can you feel anything if you put your hand on the column at the top by the wheel and at the bottom

Can you get someone to listen for it out of the car while you put it lock to lock.

If you put your reg into the DVLA website you'll be able to check mileage etc and any advisories/mot failures. It's not been a taxi has it? Only I see that you're from Wolves and there's an incredibly high proportion of cars plated there for other regions because it's cheap and easy.
Usually you'd be able to spot signs of excessive wear if it was, like screw holes in dash fascia, rear bumper etc and heavy wear on the steering wheel and gearstick.
Also I once got an airfreshener stuck down inside the plastic and it made a noise quite similar.
I would say if it can't be heard from the outside of the car then it's probably cosmetic.
