Is it really neccessary to change the ''Beveal gear'' oil?

Featured Replies

Hello.

The car has gone 170.000km and the gearbox runs well, however, i've read that it might be a good idea to change the gearbox oil despite it not being a written recommendation in the instruction manual.

So, i requested a price offer from a merchanic.

1. They responded that they don't have the equipment and that it's not usual to flush a manual transmission vehicle, and that they can only flush automatic transmissions... My question is if it isn't as necessary to flush a manually transmissioned gearbox? Otherwise changing the oil wont make to much of a difference?

2. They wrote ''If you care so much about your car to change the transmission oil, we also recommend to change the ''Bevel gear'' oil.... I have never heard about this, i also tried googling changing this oil without many results... Is there some truth in what they write or nonsense?

3. I think the ''haldex'' oil for the 4x4 system was changed around 130.000km, so 50.000km ago... How often is it good to change this? I heard that it's good to change it despite it not being written in the instruction manual.

If you want to cover all bases, just changing the gearbox oil would suffice, no need to flush it or do anything fancy, personally I think its a good idea, it can get rid of metal/wear particles and contamination that may have been left over from initial manufacturing. Don't expect to notice any difference but some do report better gear changes.

Not sure on the bevel gear oil, I assume they mean the gearing that transfers power down the prop shaft but I always thought that part was integral to the main gearbox, you would have to look that up.

It is a good idea to service the Haldex also, I always thought this generation did have a service schedule for oil and filter but if not I would still keep on top of it as its an expensive repair and would probably be more than the car is worth to try and repair at a garage.

The bevel box oil fill point is difficult to get to. I showed (felt) the location of the fill point and then had to give the mechanic a feel as we where having some difficulty in locating it.

Thanks for the info, but is there any point changing this then as part of routine maintainance?

I thought so.

Don’t know if you sorted this but it would be a good idea To change it.    I used Fuchs Titan can’t remember which grade off hand.  My 09 4x4 same car gearbox was changed @ approx 15k miles from new , it was like brown water. 😖.   They fit crappy to thin oil to get the economy numbers up. ( bloody EUSSR 🤮)  so if yours is still OK definitely change it,   Note there is a rear diff AND the Haldex which do not take the same oil .

Thanks. I changed the gearbox oil but that's it.

I'd appreciate pictures on where to change the bevel gear oil, and also where to change the rear differential box and haldex oil...

It seems difficult to both know where it's located and what type of oil to use... The instruction manual doesn't mention anything about it and there's not a lot on youtube about this for the car neither.

Your question(s) does(do) not make any sense, perhaps due to typos, you might want to rewrite them or any responses will be to what people guess the question(s) might have been intended to be.

Going from my old sketch,  looking from the left hand side of the car,  with the main drive( prop shaft) to your left facing forward. The rear diff filler and drain are @ 3 o’clock fill and 6 o’clock drain.   Adjacent to the left hand rear wheel driveshaft into housing. On the Haldex the drain is extreme bottom left of the casing and filler almost inline  above it @ the top    I have listed bevel gear ( front) .9 litre of Fuchs Titan Sinopoid FE 75W-85 also for the rear diff .925 litres.   It’s an API=GL5 = VW G 052 — 145A1 or 190A2         Gearbox ( main) 2.3 ltrs of Titan  Sintofluid FE 75W  = API=GL4 = VW G052 171 A1= 178A2 = 512A2 .   They keep updating and these Vw numbers are most likely well out of date but may help.    NB Haldex “ coupling oil” as they call it is listed @ G0552175A1  or G060 175 A2 .      It’s a lot of stuff and maybe out of date so double check — hope this helps

No. It makes perfect sense.

Thank you!

Is English your first language and how old are you?

Having now read the text many many times I still can't make sense of the two quesions which you said was one single question.

Maybe the first question mark and the full stop were in error, Were you perhaps trying to say:

If it isn't necessary to flush a manual gearbox would changing the oil make any difference?

"Flush" being a confusing choice of term, I presume you meant drain and refill with new oil.
