2.0 TDI. Dead impressed (Passat test drive).

Featured Replies

Well, I have a 2.0TDI Passat Sport on demo at the moment, and I have to say, I'm massively impressed.

There are some great touches like the key. There is no traditional key, just a fob you insert into the dash, and push into start. Its actually nice and handy, certainly more than a gimmick. Same goes for the electronic handbrake switch, takes a little getting used to but it works really well.

The dash is really nice, and feels classy throughout the interior. There are a few plastic bits that are of disappointing quality, but they are so few and far between it really doesn't matter.

The drive is really nice, although tbh in a car like this I wouldn't want the sport suspension.

But - the thing I am most impressed about is the engine! I really am amazed. Having had my vRS with the 1.9 for 30k miles now, 15k being remapped miles, I wasn't expecting to be overwhelmed. However, its soooo responsive! It revs really well, and blipping the throttle at idle results in the needle moving up the counter really very quickly - much like a petrol... you wouldn't think the 2.0 was even a relative of the 1.9, its that good.

On the move, its not sluggish at all, and feels more powerful than the 140bhp suggests. I think its atleast as quick as the standard Fabia vRS, if not more so... Its still really torquey, but more linear about it too. The revs dont tail off so much at the top end. It really is a smashing engine, and I'm 95% sure my next car will have one. Dead impressed.

I'd love to go in a remapped one - see what they can do to this great engine - it'll have to be good to improve on it!

Sounds good.

I was looking at these on the motorway yesterday, came to the conclusion that I think they look really smart tbh - I like them

I'm very impressed with the 2.0 TDI too. There's a few guys on here have got 160bhp out of theirs on the rollers without any mods. This thread may make interesting reading for you too.

Was waiting for that old chesnut to surface ;)

 Couldn't resist it. Out of interest Chris what did you think of the 2.0 TDI when you drove it.

A big improvement over the 1.9 PD130 engine as Tom says, and much smoother and more linear power delivery. Also significantly quieter, but that might be because it was in a Golf (SWMBO's Dad's new purchase) rather than the less well soundproofed Fabia. :D

Is the 2.0 TDI from the OctyII available in the Furby though? Not sure it is.

There is a new furby, how would that be if the droped a 2.0TDI in it ;)

I really don't want to think about that tbh. I might cry.

I'd love to go in a remapped one - see what they can do to this great engine - it'll have to be good to improve on it!

Got a remapped 2.0 TDI (with DSG) sat on the driveway now, not in a Passat but in a Touran (Car swap with my Dad for 24hrs).

They go rather well to say the least, just as you describe the standard one, except just that little bit smoother and with a shed load more pull across the whole range

Remap AND DSG - a brave combination! I want!

I was so impressed with the 2.0 TDI my next car did have one!

Who remapped your Dad's Touran John? I'm keen to get mine done ASAP and unfortunately my OneClick is not compatable with it's ECU.

Not so sure about that mate, they have to limit the lb/ft due to the DSG

Do they though? Isn't the DSG the same as the one in the 3.2 Audi TT albeit with altered ratios?

They do, not sure of the mechanics of exactly why. I think the same is also true with Revo DSG maps (i.e. lb/ft limited for DSG). I would think that the DSG unit wouldn't be exactly the same on a 2.0 TDI as it would for a 3.2 anyway e.g. have more upgraded stronger cogs/wheels or whatever it is that makes the thing work to cope with the extra power!

(I ain't no mechanic or have any technical nouse when it comes to things like DSG by the way, just an educated guess :o )

Does this mean that the 2.0TDI 170 uses a different DSG box than the 140?

I always understood that torque was the killer for gearboxes and not power. The 3.2 TT and 2.0 TDI OctyII both have 320Nm of torque and every gearbox has a safety margin.

Yes, they have to limit the torque (That's what I've been trying to say, not that well it appears). They had to limit to around 280 lb/ft for my Dads Touran. If he'd got the manual it would have been around the 300lb/ft mark.

The 3.2 *only* has 236 lb/ft torque, so both DSG boxes could have the same internals I suppose. It's the torque arriving in huge chunks that will upset the DSG box I think, rather than outright BHP. I would imagine it's because of the finer tolerances the twin clutches have to work to.

fair point. I thought it was a bit weird that the remap was limited to 280 lb/ft as this would indicate a safety margin on the DSG gearbox of only 16% whereas 25% extra torque appears ok on the manual box given the remaps available. You are right about the huge lumps of torque though on the Octy over the TT. That would explain it.

I've driven the 2.0TDI Golf and it shifts. My Mum loved it and said my dad's 1.9TDI (100ish BHP) Golf of the same age was awful in comparrsion. Why he went for the 1.9 is beyond me!

Saying that I think the Furby vRS is pretty much on a par performance wise.

I remember seeing the 2.0 TDI badge on VW's and not appreciating what it meant!
