Noise from camshaft drive system

Recommended Posts

Hi

So two bolts came undone from one of the camshaft pulleys and ended up adrift in the cambelt space. This caused a massive oil leak (how we discovered it) and a ticking noise that sped up with increased revs. We needed a new pulley, £300 + vat plus a cambelt change and thorough inspection! The pulley could not be used again as the threads were stripped in two of the bolt holes as shown in the pics.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Is it a manufacturing fault (bolts should not just "come undone"?)

IIRC this is a known VAG manufacturing issue and TPI's have been issued for 1.0tsi engines of a certain production range/age. This problem should have been addressed during routine servicing. Not sure if a recall was issued so if not serviced within the dealer network or a good independent using ERWIN it will have been missed.

Others may be able to dig up the relevant TPI.
