On the edge… again… phev, or go all in on ev…

@lol-lolnone of that statistics on charging and sessions can be trusted, there are ones that i do that do not come up or i have to pay for.

Then lots of times the RFID card or App does not work so i use a Credit or Debit car to start chargers and that does not show on the Account, just on my statements from bank.

200 sessions. Some are having to start chargers maybe 2 or 3 times to get the car staying charging.

Even as many as 5 attempts and no power taken & giving up in the end.

Most of my charging on CPS chargers are getting around 23 kWh in on Rapids and only 7 kWh charging for topping up after the rapid slows down and i move to let someone on the rapid.  I charge free lots at Tesco with a few 15 minute charges a session during a day.  That is usually about 50 kWh worth of charging near home each week.

As an example.

@ Whitehills hospital i only ever actually managed to get a charge 3 times.

Since these sessions once more it actually charged the car from about 4 attempts.

PodPoint used for free charging without actually claiming charger or just tapping credit card now, and last week i used up the last of the credit sitting on it.

I have credit on BP Pulse and every time i try to use my account i have to get a new Password as always fails to recognise.

It really is hopeless as are many of the 100+ chargers.

@cheezemonkhai yep, was the first one I hoped to see on the list. However in reality going and looking; I dare not before I might of just gone for it myself... anyhow the spreadsheet buying, scoring... it lost out on the bootspace. The sister car ionic5 has the trick rear seat slide. SWMBO wasn't totally comfortable in the ev6, she was in the niro so I was disapointed on a few counts. IF the GT was an option, I might of pressed her to try more ;)

@Luckypants thanks, I did know that. I was being lazy in planning, I'd done a base up to perth on 10%, then various loops from there out ot the highlands. I pretty much always go that way now to avoid loch lomond and even the callendar roads. I'll redo. SWMBO however even missing out on the fastest, ie a compromised time... she and thus we're happy with the time spent to charge. At least on paper. We do stop alot more often now post various op's. I was even thinking, rather than the crossword or a suduko puzzle, I could go for a walk, ride, jog... try to embrace the make use of my time vs seeing it as a loss.

SWMBO asked this morning, I am still wanting electric over phev. I paused for a moment, then said no lets do ev, I think it works ( just ). It's a 4 year lease. Worst case we keep my superb or it's traded in scala/fabia estate. Ideally we'd get her old focus lease, but they want silly money for it, like above WBAC/Motorway, a marked changed from 4 years back where it was peanuts compared to the market.

Thanks for the input and thoughts, really, really helpful. Let's see what falls out of the testing of the next few... then it will boil down to tesla or ...

During my test of the new Renault Austral, which is classed as Class D car I think, but is really no bigger than my Class C Arkana which is based on the Class B Clio, the Renault HQ man showed me the PHEV port on the Austral which is blanked off saying the UK is not getting the PHEV, just the 200 hp ETECH, 1.2 turbo and strong ETECH system to give it its 8 second to 60 acceleration but that the combined MPG is still over 60 mpg and it will run for periods at motorway speed and beyond in electric mode.

I was wondering at Renault's decision for the UK.  No PHEV version even though the UK has no EV subsidies currently.  I think the EV is only getting to see a portion of the world wide cars ie no RHD Model Ss or Model Xs and a host of other cars, at the other end of the scale the super cheap Chinese built Dacia Spring for well under £20k.

Petrol could be back up to £2 a litre quite easily in a matter of months ie OPEC strangling the market and winter prices.  EV will continue to grow exponentially due to falling EV prices and mass roll out of about 2k new EV chargers each month plus solar panels prices falling rapidly too and therefore running ones car on sunshine captured from home, and off peak electricity at a few pence per kW, which some of the larger EV charging networks are/will also be offering ie charge up at their network outside paytime peaks and get much cheaper charging is also becoming a reality.

I have quite a few Eco-worthy solar panel I have on my own bespoke frames and several solar generators, best one from Allpower, the S2000 Pro, that can output 2.4 kws for about half an hour but this is just the start, primarily for home but these devices are getting better and the next one I plan to acquire is the R4000 which is a 4kW output device with a 3.5 kwh capacity.  I think they show one direction that some EV owners might go.  Generate your own power, fill your EV and power stations and maybe take your power station with you in the boot, perhaps with your tracking solar array if you are going camping.  Clean living and motoring and not a penny of running cost paid to the UK government.

Oh and I think charging EVs by the mile of roads used is a dumb idea as people will come off the motorways, drive along A roads, country roads and through NIMBY villages are road pricing will be yet another failed tax measure.

Sub-categories of DVLA Class 4 vehicles

  • Class A: Micro cars - including the likes of SMART cars and city commuter vehicles.

  • Class B: Super minis - this includes Vauxhall Corsa's, Ford Fiesta's, Volkswagen Polo's and alike.

  • Class 😄 Small family vehicles - including the likes of the Ford Focus, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf.

  • Class 😧 Larger family cars - i.e. the Ford Mondeo, BMW 3 series, etc.

  • Class E: Executive cars - such as the Volvo S80, Audi A5 or BMW 5 Series.

  • Class F: Large luxury cars - Mercedes S class, Audi A8, etc.

  • Class S: Sports cars - such as the MGF Sports car, Volvo C70, Audi TT, Porsche Boxster, etc.

  • Class M: Multi-purpose vehicles (i.e. MPVs) - includes the Vauxhall Zafira, Ford Galaxy, Ford S-Max, etc.

  • Class J: 4 wheel drive (4x4) vehicles - including the Land Rover, Jeep, Toyota Tundra, etc.

If petrol is back up to £2 a litre in the UK then Gas prices will be going up and so will be Electricity & lots of other stuff, as in all that stuff moved by sea, air, rail and road.

Renault really have a confusing websites with the Austral showing what is what as in Hybrid, PHEV,  not a BEV with AWD, not an Electric SUV.

The term e-Tech 100% full hybrid, then e-Tech Plug in Hybrid.

There are UK Renault sales executives AKA as sales men / woman that need to learn about the product they are going to be selling. & not be able to sell.

She has a better grasp of Renault than some Renault UK reps.

I wouldn’t bother for the RWD, but the AWD GTL has the folding sliding rear bench.

The EV6 handles better and has better real world economy but the i5 is more lounge like and spacious.

I’ve got an eye out for the a6 avant etron but I’m guessing I shouldn’t highlight the i5 ‘N’ that’s on its way ;)

Yep, would prefer the awd.

sadly it’s a list of fairly specific models. The only awd electric is an id4 pro life.

Nissan Ariya e-4orce??

Sadly not on the list we have to work from. Non awd  Aryia there and in fourth place due to boot. Id4 is only one with some “pace” in awd form, ticks boot, still misses out to model y for charging network.  Although i still feel this is good marketing; the Tesla network…

“Pace” is said with a tongue in my cheek… any of them is a fab choice to have and almost all are good enough performance by any measure of reality on uk roads.

perhaps it’s me turning 50, tyres; pothole ready, and boot space; accumulated detritus I don’t actually need.

:)

Get a nice big 3L turbo diesel? 😂😂👍
