Flashing glow plug light but recently had all glow plugs changed?

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this for me.

I've recently had a number of issues with the glow plug symbol flashing on the dashboard from turning electrics on and then it continues flashing when ignition is on (This usually makes the car drive in limp mode).

I've recently had all of the glow plugs changed in the last month or so and have only owned the car since November last year. From the service book it states that the EGR was replaced back in 2020 so I'd like to think (pray) that this isn't the issue?

Has anyone got some advice on what could be causing this as its having a severe impact on me getting to and from work? Oddly enough the issue doesn't happen every time I start the car, only on the odd occasion here and there.

It's a 2011 Skoda Octavia MKII that has done approximately 86,000 miles.

You really need to have it scanned with VCDS or even a basic OBD II reader may give you some fault codes and a clue as to what the problem is, without having it scanned it could be anything, there is a section on this website (can't remember where) that you can contact members who have VCDS that may live near you and may scan it for you for a beer or two. The glow plug light flashing is not just for the glow plugs.

The glow plug light is used as a general warning light for anything that needs attention and is an indication that a fault code has been created and is stored.

The usual reason for going into limp mode is that the variable vanes in the turbo have become clogged with hard soot.

Limp mode usually happens when you ask the engine to give extra torque such as putting your foot down on a steep hill. It can be reset temporarily by turning off the engine then restarting.

Is yours a 1.6 TDI, engine code CAYC?

Did your car have the emissions service action and was this the reason for the EGR failure? Look for a sticker in the boot near the spare wheel showing 23R6.

Next step is to have the failure code(s) read.

Before spending out money, check if the brake lights work. If none of them do, you need a new brake light switch.

I had just this recently, and after using my little code reader it turned out to be the brake light switch, which cost about £15.

I would get a code reader on it to try to narrow down the issue.

Thanks mate - all my brake lights are working on the vehicle at the moment.

Did you buy your own code reader or use someone else's? If you bought your's do you have any recommendations?

Hi, my brake lights were also working, but my guess is, at some point there was a passing issue that logged the fault. Incidentally now I have changed it and cleared the fault my cruise control has come back to life, bonus! My reader came from eBay, 5 or so years ago, maybe more, it does OBD2 and VAG codes, it really has been a help and cost 30-40 quid. I think they're all much the same thing at that price range.
