1.5 petrol v 1.0 petrol

Hi, I’m looking at 2 Octavias to possibly buy -

 

1.  2018 1.5 TSI petrol manual, 95000 miles, FSH.

 

2. 2018 1.0 TSI petrol manual, 86000 miles, FSH. 
 

Any opinions on which to go for?

Some 2018 1.5 TSI ACT,s had issues and required a software update, there was a Safety Recall on lack of torque, so check that the service and warranty history on that and was this software update done.

 

@ 5 years the Cam belt is due a replacement and quotes on that are between £750 which is actually low & as high as £1,100 plus, 

which has become common, so check that out.

 

The 1.0TSI also requires a Cam Belt replacement @ 5 years according to Skoda / VW UK, and that is cheaper, but needs done by someone that knows their stuff, 

not as straightforward as the old days.  (There are ones co-cked up already if you look in the Mk3 Fabia Section.)

 

Both are at the mileage where at least one change of spark plugs was due, and actually a 2nd change is due.

So what does the Full Service History show other than Oil & Inspection Services & Extended Scope in 2021 and then 2023, 

is it even that.

ARE THEY SERVICED TO THE MANUFACTURERS GUIDELINES, RECOMMENDATIONS or SPECIFICATION / SCHEDULE?

So that you could take out a Skoda Used Car Warranty if you wanted to?

 

I think they will need the cambelt changed for that to be the case.

 

 

Pollen filters twice changed?

?

Brake Fluid ever changed?

?

What are the tyres and brakes looking like?

?

Are the windscreens OK, not too chipped?

 

Drive them and you decide.

Personally, I'd avoid the 1.0 TSI, but that's a personal preference, and a personal assumption that a 1.0L engine lugging an Octavia around for the best part of 100K miles will be knackered.

I'd love to back it up with some sort of evidence, but I haven't got any. As far as I know, the 1.0 is a good engine that gives excellent real-world economy, and 115PS is plenty of power for an Octavia under most driving conditions, day to day.

I haven't seen the reports I expected of the 1.0 TSI being worn-out after this sort of mileage, any more than large-capacity engines.

 

Personally, of the two, I would prefer the 1.5 engine, as it's got some clever tech in it that allows it to use just 2 cylinders at low load/demand for high economy, which appeals to the engineer in me.

It's also got 150PS which is a decent amount of power for an Octavia. It's no ball of fire, but it's plenty to give the Octavia sprightly performance and not leave you stuck behind a tractor on an A-road somewhere.

That said, there were/are some issues with jerky performance at low speeds with the 1.5L TSI. They can be sorted, but there was a time when they needed sorting, so if you choose one, look out for that.
