Recently bought a 2016 Skoda Octavia saloon. Not knowledge about cars but feel that clutch is a bit scratchy when pushing down on the first few gears. Also sticks sometimes between 1st and reverse gears. Not sure if linked or separate but any help would be much appreciated 

Please explain what you mean by 'scratchy'?

 

When going between 1st and reverse you many need to allow a short time for the reverse layshaft in the gearbox to slow/stop.

When I press the clutch down it feels like the pedal is scratching against something. But only when going up gears and not down then especially in the lower gears

The clutch is hydraulically operated, so sounds more like something on the pedal to me?

Good practice but unnecessary, the gearboxes have had synchromesh on reverse gear for decades, double synchro cones in fact!

Your clutch pedal, master and slave cylinders will not know what gear you are in or changing to.
