DSG Gears jump when driving

Featured Replies

Hi there, I changed the chain on my Fabia a few months ago. There has always been a P0068 code I couldn’t fix. Recently I drove the car and the D numbers started flashing and the gears jumped into D1 the 7 the 4 then 5 rapidly and the engine definitely revved loudly. Car was a bit jerky as I drove home very slowly. Car starts, goes through gears parked. Will engage in all gears. It is 2010 and dsg oil never changed 72k on clock. Thought I’d change gearbox oil first, finally think I’ve found a fill plug ontop on gearbox with small plastic cover on it; looks like it’s a tube and syringe job to get 1.7litres back in. Just wondered if anyone had any advice please as Skoda told me the oil is lifetime (but says change every 40k). They also told me Skoda engine chains never break and they hadn’t heard any issues with them, which is clearly untrue.

What did you expect them to say, "yessir, our cars are useless, I'm amazed you bothered buying one"?

Manual gearboxes are lifetime, DSG is classed as an automatic, someone will be along shortly to tell you which magic jizz to use, how to do it and which leg to stand on while doing it!

@Skodias

Welcome.

What engine has your car?

Pity you had not found out about DQ200,s before doing your oil change.   Pinned thread at top of section.

So if a 2010 DQ200 DSG here was a Service Campaign started to change the oil from Synthetic to mineral and a software update.

If done there should be a sticker in the spare tyre well with '34F7' on it.  On ones 2009-2012 built before September.

(So it might well have been changed.)

Otherwise there is no Oil Changes @ 40,000 miles and there are 2 oils, in the box and in the MCU.

Millers do good gearbox fluid for the Dsg gearbox that’s what I use anyway but it would help if we knew wether it was a dq200 or dq250  👍

6 Speed wet clutch DSG were not fitted to Mk2 Fabia by Skoda.

(DQ250 that was not used but @thomasaspinfitted has the same oil for the box and MCU @ the 40,000 mile service interval.

The other auto  boxes used were Tiptronics.

Skoda / VW had no service interval showing for them for years and eventually there were 'suggestions' that changing the ATF fluid @ 100,000 miles might be 'Simply Clever'.

never in this world of automotive lubricants is any oil fit for life

To be fair manual gearbox oil doesn't get contaminated or cooked, it leads a very simple and easy life splashing about in the shallow end of the lubricant gene pool.

Manual gearboxes fail because of a defective component or because a leak has gradually reduced the oil level which has allowed a bearing to run dry, never because the oil didn't get changed!

The OP,s might well be a leak of oil from the MCU, pressure loss, selectors, or it might be the box it,s self at fault.

The DSG might well have had the oil change since 2014 which might be more than can be said with some from late 2012 / 2013 when the factory fill was Mineral oil and a change of software.

Thanks for replies 👍

Am thinking it’s the mechatronic unit, so will drop oil and measure to see if any loss. I find it hard to believe that the mechatronic unit can only be coded to one car. What happens if it’s destroyed in a crash, then the cars a write off I assume?

With hardware you can clone the mechatronics they sell all the required hardware on AliExpress etc

@Skodias

?

Is the sticker in the spare tyre well showing the service campaign done, '34F7' and the date and dealer stamp?

Do you have the car Service & Warranty history for the cars early years.  Then anything could have been done since.

The car might not have the original engine or DSG or MCU / TCU.

Skoda had to replace MCU,s and with some cars had to provide new ECU,s

That was when they were doing ones under warranty & they had Dealership Techs fitting the new MCU and not knowing what they were doing.

From the 2010 Mk2 Fabia vRS in 2010 there were locked ECU,s and unlocked ECU and 3 different Softwares / managements while the CAVE engine was used.

Thank you for all the help. Managed to get it properly scanned (not an OBd2) and it said air intake problem (I did wonder if a MAF issue at one point). I’ve bought a new pressure sensor (as not called MAF on Fabia apparently) and air filter as never changed. Engine light back on, so now thinking there is another identical sensor on back of engine, will swap around and see what happens...

Right...the cheap OBD scam kept saying p0068 and p00068P. Now I know why...

There seem to be 2 boost sensors: one in air intake and on clipped into back of engine. Bought 2 (GSF £30 each) and all problems seem to have gone away! Result! Massive thank you to everyone for ace input and knowledge 👍

@SkodiasGood.

Could you say what engine your car has please for anyone looking at this thread in the future?
