Issue with passenger side door, no power (electrical)

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have been looking over many old briskoda posts relating to my issue but i cant find the answer i'm after, so i thought id sign up and ask for myself :D

I bought a 2010 Skoda estate 1.6 diesel (mk2 Facelift) as a runaround, high mileage, cheap tax lots of space. The previous owner said he had the passenger window looked at, but it didn't work when i bought it, didn't think twice about it as its fixable. I then used the car as is for about 3 weeks and on the odd occasion id struggle opening the passenger side door. Realized that there is an issue and set aside some time on the weekend to take the door card off and have a look. i searched quickly and saw it may be the wire linkages between the door and frame, i checked them quickly and didn't see any obvious breaks. Before the weekend came around unfortunately the speaker was acting weird (intermittent) but i didn't take much notice. Then it happened no power to the door after i dead bolted it shut. No speaker, no internal light, no central locking, no mirror movement, no window and no ability to open the door. After headbutting the wall for an hour and searching the forum i saw a few people had similar issues and i followed suit and this weekend that just passed i managed to take the card off without being able to open the door.

I can obviously see someone has been here before, missing rivets and scraping. I think he had the motor replaced for the window, that's seemingly instantly failed again. I saw the speaker connection was slightly out so plugged it back in. I then following advice from here took all the plugs out of the motor control unit it and sprayed then will electrical cleaner and did my best to clean it. Tested my handy work, the speaker now works but nothing else. Door wont unlock, no sound of it unlocking when i use the fob, windows don't work etc.

So im after some wisdom do i smash the lock apart? replace the motor unit? i have a multi meter, is it possible to test the wires without opening the door to see if they have power? if so what wires. Its my first attempts to try and fix my own car so go easy on me im slightly out of my depths.

I've done a full service, changed a leaking fuel filter housing and given it a good clean now all that's left is to get the door working :D i really don't want to concede and take it to a garage. Thanks in advance for your help.

Worth checking the wires for breaks in the drivers door flexible conduit between the door and body. Some of those wires go the passenger door.

The writing was on the wall.

Any electrical fault in a door needs prompt attention before further issues culminate in your current predicament.

You will have to open the door and thoroughly check the wiring into it, I've no doubt you'll find a broken wire or two or loose/corroded connection.

Thanks for the heads up, ill spend some time tomorrow going over everything and ill see what i can find. hopefully my multi meter will be helpful.

Ill update if i find anything of note.

So I've taken the driver's door card off sprayed all the connections. Done the same for my frame connections. I checked the passenger and it's unlocked.

My issue now is that the central locking doesn't work. On the left hand side, the speaker has power but the windows, lights central locking doesn't work in the front or rear passenger. I'm currently sat in my car defeated.

Any help would be appreciated 👍

I've also now sprayed electoral cleaning spray on all connections in doors and frames.

I found these to be corroded slightly. Can I remove these and clean them? Then put them back? If so how?

Thanks

I managed to take the outer plastic of the connection and i can see wire contacting the metal and gave it another spray.

I've also noticed i can only open the door from the outside and not from the inside.

I have a multi meter what settings would i need to test these wires and how would i set uit up? I want to see seemingly at what point do i lose power?

Sorry for the spam its just driving me insane

Last update before i have some beer, i can open the passenger door now some how but it wont lock. There's still no power to the in door light, windows and lock. I've also noticed when the door is open the car doesn't display it as open on the display.

Well at least you now have access to the passenger door which is progress.

Take off the door card and see if the cable pull has come off the inside door opening lever or at the other end. It is easy to make this mistake here when putting the door card back.

The fact that there is no door open icon on the dash says that either the signal wire is broken/poor contact and you still have some electrical cable issues.

Final thought is the microswitch in the door lock that produces the door open icon amongst other things is no longer functioning. If so, replacing the mechanism is the best way out, but be sure you have explored all other possibilities first.

Thanks Pik,

The picture is from the in-between the pillar and door on the passenger side. I sprayed it with electrical cleaner and did my best to remove corrosion.

The rivets on the metal cover are seemingly already drilled out as the window mech has been replaced by previous owner but they haven't put enough bolts in so it's semi lose and hanging. I'm starting to think this has lead to the connection to the lock to come undone. The issue I have is I'm a newbie to electrical and don't want to make it worse. If I take the few bolts of thet they replaced the rivets with and pull back the metal cover I really don't want the glass to fall out or disassemble itself. Do you happen to know if me taking a look would cause this? Also would you know any posts by previous members where the lock mech has lost power? I've tried googling and searching but I've come up short.

Lastly do you happen to know the multi meter settings I need to check the power of the cables? I've tried YouTubeing it and I'm coming short?

I would also like to say how much I value this help as I don't feel like I'm on my own headbutting the broken door on my car.

So, an update i have not managed to resolve the issue with any of the above attempts.

Unsure if the rain or just an hour of driving did the trick but seeming i walk out to see the car with all windows slightly down in the rain yesterday after driving for an hour.

The alarm was going of again yesterday, I've taken the fuse out previously as it was consistently happening before. either my tinkering with both doors has helped? the rain has helped? or a broken wire has reconnected?

Do you think a bad battery could be the cause of this? as I've not found the fault i dont feel like i can depend on the car. If i lock the car and cant reopen it again or put the passenger windows down and then then cant get them back up it going to be a huge pain. I think i need to scan the car or something as electrical is proving almost impossible to resolve.

Im having warnings about the disk break sensors and on start up there's a rough idle until it hits temp. any ideas?

so after this driving me nuts for an age the doors started to work again and then stopped and they are seemingly working again now. I caved and bought a Carly OBD reader and it says my car battery is very poor and there is a 10% draw on the battery. I assume there's something shorted somewhere. From all of my checks in the door jams and with the door panels off i cant seem to find anything. I have a multi meter but i'm new to electric fault finding. Can anyone give me any tips on how to find what specific wire is shorting?

I bought the car as a little project and its frustrating that the main issue with car is causing me so many issues 😞

Unclip the gaiter covering the doorloop and visibly inspect all of the wires through the whole length visible, then flex back and forth each conductor along its length to show up any fractured wires, normally the insulation will be broken.

Then do the same on the drivers door which is the one that gets the most wear, wiring faults there can affect the other doors, my money is on your problem being found there.
