Shorted a live

Featured Replies

As heading says, I accidently shorted a live feed for trailer lights in the boot.. I found the blown fuse on the live feed wire and replaced it with a new one but found that I now have no dash lights when I turn on the ignition and naturally, no start.

I have gone through all the checks such as testing all fuses including continuity and bench tested all relays. Everything seems to be in order. Can somebody tell me where I should go to from here seeing as I cannot drive the car to a garage.

Have you checked the fuses in the engine compartment as well as those in the cabin fusebox?

Thanks for your reply liger 1956. Yes I have double and treble checked the both in situ to check for current being present and going through each one. All OK. I had taken them out one by one prior to that to check for continuity in case of cracked or damaged ones. All OK. I checked for parasitic current draw also. Nothing found. The draw when all systems were down and car left for hours to 'sleep' was only 19 milliamps, which was quite good.

I awoke this morning with the notion that I may have misplaced one of the fuses in the cabin fusebox. There was one which according to the book was unallocated but which has 'contacts' at bot sides but no fuse and I will put in a 10 or 15 amp to see if it changes anything. I cannot do it right now but I will get back on later and report my findings.

As promised. I'm glad to say that my suspicion was correct. It seems that 'someone' mustn't have returned a certain fuse to where it came from in the cabin fuse box. In my defense when I looked up the book to check initially as I said in my last post, it said that position was unallocated so I made the assumption that it wasn't the source of my problem. Somebody must have moved the goalposts. The lesson is as many others have said on various posts... TAKE A PHOTO OF THE FUSEBOX BEFORE YOU TOUCH ANYTHING.

Thank you liger1956 for taking the time to help. It's much appreciated.

I am glad that you got it sorted out. I must take a photo of my fusebox just in case!
