Wireless question.

Featured Replies

I have a Philips 'Streamium' PC with a built in Ralink WLAN card and a little ariel sticking out the back.

I connect to Blueyonder broadband via a network cable which runs from the PC to the modem which is next to the cable socket.

I was wondering if I could connect my PSP (or any other device) to my PC via the wireless card, then use the existing wired broadband connection to get online?

Or would I have to buy a Wireless router and connect via a wireless network?

I haven't got a clue. I've tried visiting the Ralink website, but I don't think they've taken GCSE English yet.

It should be possible - you'd essentially be turning the PC into a wireless router...

Rob.

stuff it, buy a wireless router and make life easy for yourself.

Get the wireless router. Doing it the way you are thinking is a right pain in the ar$e.

It can be done (in theory) by enabling Internet Connection Sharing on the wired broadband connection, then doing an ad-hoc connection between the PSP and the wireless NIC.

Might be a pain to setup - get a cheapo wireless router instead.

I agree entirely.

A router is dirt cheap and it means you won't need to have the PC on to access the net

Thanks chaps. A router it is then.

Any recommendations please?

Buffalo!!! Do not buy Linksys!!! The Linksys router and other equipment I have almost got set on fire by me for being carp!!!!

used to do exactly what you were thinking of doing and linked three pc's together but it was a royal pain to keep it going all the time.

netgear routers aren't very clever either :thumbdwn:

I've had Belikin. D-Link, Linksys and Netgear routers. At best i got 12 months out of them. Those silly mains plug adapters were the main culprit. I now have an 8-Port SMC Barracade router. Al metal construction with the power supply built-in . It doesnt have wireless built-in soI have a separate Belkin wireless gateway for my laptop but the other PC's are all hard wired back to the SMC.
