Sump. Paint, leave, replace ?

Featured Replies

The oil sump on my 1.4 tsi is very rusty. I knew it was rusting but I’ve been ignoring it and looks quite bad now.

It is due an oil change soon and thought I probably ought to give the sump some attention.

Options are -

1. leave it until it starts leaking

2. fit a new sump

3. paint it.

Can anyone recommend a decent paint for engine sumps ? If so I might clean it up and paint it. Thanks

That all looks like surface corrosion to me which is just a light film of oxidisation.

Personally I’d leave it as is :)

Loosen the rocker cover screws 😄

Engines never used to have this type of problem!

Owatrol oil by Rustol will seal the surface corrosion against moisture and stop any further corrosion, thats what I would do if I were concerned.

The picture doesn’t show the worst area, (these cars are so low to the ground) it’s pretty crusty on the flat bit nearest the crank pulley.

Give it some Hammerite!

I'd tackle it if I was you. I've just had to replace the steel cover on the front and side of my gearbox on a 2013 2.0 VRS as the rust had made a pinhole the oil was leaking out of!

Got a proper look at it today, with an oil and filter change, pretty bad in places.

Also consider sourcing a used full length plastic under tray as I'm sure some models come with full length trays

Good idea, I’ll have a look on eBay.

I did see a new full length steel one that was £158.

I’ve painted it. Not pretty but should slow the rot. Cleaned it up and rubbed it down as best as I could, then a couple of coats of zinc primer and some black engine enamel.
