Mechatronic Unit Failure

Featured Replies

Thanks for the information in some of the other posts about mechatronic unit failures.  I live just outside of Perth, Scotland and have been searching the local Skoda dealers and independent garages that will deal with an automatic transmission to find someone to fix it.  I am wondering if anyone knows of a reputable garage that might do this type of work in my area.  I would be prepared to go to Stirling or even Edinburgh/Glasgow if necessary.  Many thanks.

Welcome,

Is it drivable?

It will not be Skoda, John Clark Group, Specialist cars Dundee or Thomson Potter Perth. & not Arnold Clark.

Maybe no use for you but it is my buddy Jeff Butler.

Probably very busy and in Forfar.

PS

Is it a Fabia Mk2 and a DQ200 7 speed twin dry clutch DSG,

or an Octavia Estate 2014 with either a DQ200 or a DQ250 6 speed wet clutch DSG?

Thanks Toot.  I was referred to Charles Butler and yes, very busy.  Can't get to it until at least October!  It is an Octavia with a 7 speed DSG.

@somedayscratchWhat is happening with your DSG, symptoms?

Did your DQ200 DSG require or get the Recall Action called in 2017 for some from 2013-2015 which was a software update. '34H5'.

I purchased the car used in 2020 and have used independent garages since then. I don't recall anything in the maintenance history about recalls.  I had problems with the computer in the car and ended up having it replaced recently, so I am assuming that they installed the most recent software, but can check.

'34H5' was not coming up as a Recall Action like '34F7' before it on DQ200,s 2009-2012. Then it started to a couple of years ago.

Hardly matters if done or not but it was as a preventative measure because of a pressure / heat / cracks issue,

you need a diagnosis and if it is the MCU, a leak or whatever and just the Overhaul / Repair Kit, a refurbish or replacement.

Or something else, selectors.

I got my car back today.  I ended up taking it to Caledonian Transmissions in Glasgow.  I can highly recommend them.  They rebuilt the mechatronic unit and provided a year's warranty on the work, which was comparable to getting it replaced elsewhere and the cost was £1300 as opposed to the £2500-£3000 quotes I was getting elsewhere.  If you have issues with your automatic transmission, this would seem to be a place worth checking out.

Why are they charging so much. Isn't it like 2-3 hours labour and around £200 for the parts.

There's no chance of removing, stripping, reconditioning and refitting a mechatronic unit in a couple of hours. Not possible.

Ah right, there must be different ways of repairing them then. There are some videos on YouTube that show them doing it without removing the unit from the car.

Be careful what you watch on YouTube, there are (mainly foreign) cretins who don't show the trail of snapped clips, smashed plastics and broken wires they left behind them to bring you the news of how brilliant they are at fixing stuff just to farm paying clicks from amateurs.

There are some faults that can be easily fixed if you know exactly where to look and you don't have to guarantee your work or you don't care about other related failures once the owner has driven away after greasing your hairy palm.

Maybe wah007 saw a video of the accumulator housing aftermarket repair kit being fitted?

Maybe, nonetheless the undertray still has to be removed which can take half an hour to do properly without leaving a trail of smashed plastic and rounded and snapped fasteners littering the floor...

Yes, that was the one. I have a lot to learn about mechatronics.

"Properly" in many garages means putting it back on with missing fasteners or tywraps or throwing it in the skip and denying all knowledge of its existence!

The rear M6 setscews that go into the alloy subframe normally shear despite my prior knowledge and best efforts to release them.
