1.0 TSI misfires on acceleration

Featured Replies

Hello fellow Skoda enthusiasts,

I own a 2019 Skoda Octavia 1.0 TSI, and I've been enjoying smooth rides until last Saturday. While accelerating on the highway, my engine suddenly began to misfire repeatedly, which caught me off guard. When I eased off the gas pedal, the misfire stopped. If I provoked the engine by accelerating further, the engine started to misfire again and the Check Engine light started flashing. Surprisingly, the light went off after about a minute if I released the pressure on the gas pedal. It's as if the car prefers driving "with an egg between the foot and the pedal."

I've continued to use the car, but unfortunately, the problem is getting worse. Now, I can't reach normal highway speeds in Sweden (110 km/h) without the engine starting to misfire, no matter how cautiously I drive. I've tried to diagnose the issue by checking for error codes with my non-VAG OBD2 scanner, but to my surprise, there were no error codes reported.

I'm reaching out to this community in the hope that someone has encountered a similar problem or might have some clues about the possible root causes. Your expertise and insights would be greatly appreciated in helping me resolve this frustrating issue.

Thank you in advance for your assistance and valuable input!

No experience of that engine at all but.. generally. 1. A proper diagnostic read may be useful 2. If still no codes, live data misfire data may tell you which cylinder it is or if it is across all 3. If cylinder specific, coil packs, plugs or injectors are all possibilities.  Usually, you can swap out plugs or coil packs on the problem cylinder, one item at a time,  and see if problem moves. If it does, it's the item you just moved.  If it doesn't move its something else on that cylinder..

?

Where the spark plugs replaced at 64,000 km / 4 years or sooner?

Some are nit even good for that long.

Thanks for your answers.

The spark plugs were replaced at 60,000 km, but the car has been running an additional 3,000 since then (two years ago). So maybe I will start with simply replacing the spark

plugs.

Btw, is there an affordable ODB2-scanner than can handle VAG-specific DTCs that you can recommend ? I will only use it occasionally for checking DTCs, nothing else.

Thanks for your advice @TheClientand @Rooted. I simply replaced all spark plugs and coil packs, and then the problem was gone!

(I did a type above, then car had been running close to 30,000 km since the last spark plug replacement and not 3,000 that I incorrectly wrote above. So it was about time to replace them.)

Cheers

This reminds me. I need to change the plugs on my 1.5 TSI. Mines are now 15k miles over the replacement time and I think I’m getting a very slight misfire.

@gm73will this be the 2nd time or the 3rd time the plugs have been replaced?

How were they the previous times?

2nd time. Car is on 95k.

The plugs were pretty clean when they came out.

I replaced the previous ones at 40k but I haven’t experienced any running issues. Well, until now but it might be my imagination. I’ve kept the old ones as well incase I need them.

The ones I have are the same as the original

plugs. £60 for four plugs
