High Beam cuts out after activation

Featured Replies

Hi folks, Octavia MKii '55 plate - When switching to high beam, slight delay; LHS light cuts in but not RHS - then shuts off and goes to normal beams although the blue light stays on.

Normally, High beam switch is INSTANT, so any ideas? IS it a relay or will changing the Main beam bulb fix it.? Ist a protection thing so that you can't run with just one high beam?Cheers,

Wurze

Hello Wurze, do you have standard halogen bulbs fitted? Any 'lamp out' warnings? Possibly a broken lamp filament. First suggestion would be to just replace suspect bulb. Same thing goes if you have HID lamps - common for discharge lamps to light-up then extinguish when life-expired.

Hi Warrior, As soon as it stops raining i'm going to check!

Yes the pesky little 'bulb out' warning lamp came on a few days back - all bulbs everywhere all ok (as far is i could tell - didn't check to see if there's a glove box one to be honest) and it went off, came back some time mid-journeys, sometimes went off on its own mid journeys - no particular pattern.

I think one of our Octy friends said that the warning bulb can come on even though all bulbs function OK - down to a resistance measurement issue indicating a 'just-about-to-fail-but-ok-right-now' status.

Just noticed a string somewhere else about something called a BCM likely faulty but don't know if my model has one. Something else to find!

I'll check bulbs first.

Appreciate your help!

Hi Wurze, I have seen more than a few halogen bulbs fail where the filament breaks, but temporarily 'welds' itself back together while flopping around.

AFAIK, the glove compartment, trunk and similar lamps are not monitored by the system - as they are not safety related.

Update - Although the OS bulb tests ok with circuit tester it looked a bit heat damaged around the metal base, so swapped with new bulb and the high beam now goes on and stays on.

I ordered a new pair so will swap both out together.

I've never known a car do that before - shut of the remaining bulb!

Weird.

Thanks fellas

Had to take headlamp out (fixing washer bottle issue) so I think the same thing has happened - filament broken but mends itself temporarily.

Another bud of mine with a n Octy has the same issue.
